Jasper stood in the center of the empty bedroom, the silence so heavy he could hear the thudding of his own heart. His heart plummeted into a hollow void. 'What was happening? Had Cindy really left?' He recalled the way she'd looked at him lately—dead-eyed and vacant, as if she were staring at a total stranger. No, he told himself. She was just venting. Cindy loved him to a fault. She'd chased after him for five long years; there was no way she'd just vanish. But the unease clawing at his chest only intensified. A violent coughing fit seized him, and he felt the wounds on his back rip open once more. Jenna stared at the blank screen, scowling. Those two men still hadn't replied. They weren't getting carried away with her, were they? She cursed them as useless trash under her breat
