Chapter 9: The Battle(A)
Groups A and B of guards rushed to the second floor and stared in horror at Balota's mutilated body.
“Deputy Chief Barlotta has actually been killed?!”
“What happened here?”
“Where did the enemy go?”
“Why isn't anyone answering in the monitoring room!”
“Go and consult Dr. Lim Wei-hyun immediately.”
“Team C has found Dr. Lin Weixian's body!”
“My god......”
All the guards drew in a sharp breath, their faces filled with shock. Had all this been done by the seemingly docile Zero they remembered? The entire base had been thrown into chaos by Zero alone. The important leaders were either dead or had fled, and the guards were startled to realize that there was no one giving orders.
Wasn't that test subject brainwashed? Could it be that he had long been harboring malicious intentions, waiting for an opportunity to strike?
Contemplating this possibility, the guards were horrified to realize that Han Xiao's unassuming guise was like a sharp sword hanging over their heads, ready to claim their lives at any moment, like a hidden assassin lurking in the shadows. And they had been completely oblivious, even ignoring Han Xiao's existence.
Everyone was instantly seized by terror, breaking out in a cold sweat.
“Don't panic. There's only one enemy. Conduct a thorough search. Open fire is permitted. Group A, head to the weapons depot. Group B, check the situation in the monitoring room. Group C, go to the lab to safeguard the experimental data. Group D, guard the gate. Whatever Zero intends to do, if he tries to escape, he'll definitely head for the gate. Move!”
At this critical moment, the captain of Group A took charge of the command, his thoughts clear as he shouted out orders.
The instructions were straightforward, and the guards immediately sprang into action. The sixty armed personnel in the base were divided into four groups, A, B, C, and D. Normally, they were stationed at different posts, but in case of an unexpected situation, they would quickly assemble.
However, Han Xiao had multiple strategies to deal with various scenarios.
“Rumble!”
A dull sound suddenly emanated from below. Every guard felt the ground tremble. Team A grew alarmed, and the leader shouted urgently, “What's going on?!”
The sound of intense gunfire crackled through the intercom, intermingled with urgent shouts. “Team C has encountered the enemy in the lab. Repeat, Team C has encountered the enemy in the lab. Damn it, Zero detonated a grenade. The lab is on fire!”
“Where did he get the grenade?!” The captain of Team A was shocked and furious. He and his team members were currently guarding the door of the weapons depot, and no one had come anywhere near.
“Reinforcements, send reinforcements immediately! Which group is the closest?”
“Our Group B is also on the third basement level. The monitoring room has been destroyed. We're rushing over to engage in the firefight!”
......
On the third basement floor, Han Xiao was concealed in the corner of the corridor. The lab, ten meters away, was now billowing with black smoke, and the flames raged fiercely. He had hurled three grenades tied together, incinerating the Valkyrie's experimental materials. More than a dozen guards from Team C were firing continuously at the corner where he was hiding.
After killing Balota, Han Xiao didn't head straight for the main gate. Instead, he went back in the opposite direction to the third basement. He knew that the guards would surely set up a dragnet and commence a thorough search from the upper floors. Rushing up there would undoubtedly lead to an ambush.
Since the plan to sneak away had failed, Han Xiao could only alter his strategy. The laboratory was located on the third underground level, where all the experimental data were stored. It could be said to be the core area of the entire base. Blowing up this place could disrupt the enemy's deployment to a certain extent.
What, you're wondering where his grenades came from?
Han Xiao had essentially assembled and studied all the equipment in the weapons depot. It was not at all difficult for him to pilfer a small amount of the grenade's gunpowder and steel beads during the process and quietly fashion a new grenade to conceal.
Stealing and improvising, a natural talent, you get the idea.
“There are still 77 rounds of pistol ammunition and five homemade grenades.”
Han Xiao checked his equipment. His firepower was limited. He darted out from the corner to take a quick look and then immediately withdrew. The bullets swept over in an instant. If he had been 0.5 seconds slower, he would have been hit by two or three shots.
“Twelve guards, three Wright N9 micro - submachine guns, nine Type 73 Wasp pistols. Their firepower is more intense than mine.”
Han Xiao's eyes glinted. A minute had passed since the attack on the lab, and Group B's men would arrive in three minutes. He didn't have much time left. Logically, he shouldn't have known this information, but Han Xiao had picked up the walkie - talkies from the guards' corpses, thus learning about the enemy's deployment.
The situation had unfolded so suddenly that the guards didn't realize for a moment that the walkie - talkies were revealing their movements.
Han Xiao primed a grenade and hurled it out. With a thunderous explosion, the Team C guards sought cover to hide, and the gunfire ceased.
Han Xiao's expression hardened into a stony mask. With his mechanical arm in front of his body, he charged forward with great strides, rapidly closing the distance between the two sides.
Before the smoke cleared, Han Xiao dashed through the smoke and reached a guard. His mechanical iron fist pummeled the other's abdomen. The guard immediately spat out a mouthful of blood, along with fragments of internal organs. This single punch depleted more than half of the target's life value, directly incapacitating the enemy's combat ability.
“Shoot! Shoot quickly!”
The gunfire was deafening. Han Xiao grabbed the guard's body and advanced. The other enemies didn't hesitate to fire resolutely. The guard's back spurted out blood, and he was shot into a mass of mangled flesh.
