We're twin brothers

After a decade away, the winding road led back to the city I had left behind, a place that carried such contradictory memories. Ten years had passed since I set out in search of answers, in search of a purpose that transcended the dark stories and unsolved mysteries that haunted my childhood. I had to leave London to be here. The university could survive without me. I could see the signs saying that I was close by. The town, a community of 25,000 inhabitants, had always seemed immersed in a tranquil atmosphere, its streets bright with local commerce and the daily life of the residents. But I knew that behind the tranquil façade, secrets lurked in the shadows, as did my search for answers. I'm Elisa Colin, an obstinate woman who dedicates her life to investigating unexplained events, driven by a past marked by the tragic loss of my mother. Ever since I was a little girl, I've been haunted by a question that has never ceased to echo in my mind: what happened on that fateful night? When I received a request for help investigating the recent mysterious attacks that had plagued the city, I couldn't refuse. Maybe, just maybe, these events could be related to what took my mother away from me. However, the irony of fate seemed to be having fun with me that day. The rain reminded me of the past. The city was still a long way off and I wanted to stop and wait. But I didn't know where to go or it wasn't safe. The attacks had started three months ago. They had a lot in common with the case ten years ago. The police didn't want to report it so as not to open the investigation into the missing women. One of them was my mother. I felt the rain hit the windshield hard and had to hold back a curse when I saw a tree trunk blocking the road. The damn rain didn't seem to stop, and the situation only got worse. It made me yearn for houses, for safe havens where the harsh weather of the world would stay outside. As if the universe was mocking the situation, fate gave me a little nudge, suggesting that I didn't have total control over my means of transportation. I grabbed my umbrella, ready to face the storm, but the moment I stepped out of the car, a gust of wind turned the umbrella upside down, drenching me. The raindrops soaked my jacket, and the cold sensation of the water seeping through my clothes made me shiver. I approached the fallen log, hoping to find a detour, but the reality was cruel: there was no way out. The road was blocked. Great, Elisa! I turned to go back to the car and reassess my options, when something strange caught my eye. The ceiling light inside the car was shining brightly, but strangely I could only see a brief glimpse of the key. I tried to open the door, but it wouldn't budge. "It's not possible," I muttered to myself, feeling a pang of panic begin to form in my chest. I took a step back, trying to stay calm, but thunder echoed in the sky, shaking the room. The sound of heavy rain mixed with the fuzzy noises that seemed to come from inside the vehicle. My car had locked itself from the inside. At that moment, I felt totally helpless, like a wet d**k in a storm. I frantically tried to open all the doors, looking for any possible way out. When I tried to start the car to operate the door mechanism, two nearby voices mixed with the deafening noise of the rain, making me shudder. I almost ran back to get the umbrella, but the bizarre situation kept me standing still, trying to find a way out of that uncomfortable crossroads. I felt the rainwater running down my back as I faced the roadblock. Visibility was already poor, and the tree trunk made the situation even more difficult. Between the drops hitting the windshield, I saw two blurry shadows in the middle of the storm. Blinking a few times to focus my vision, I finally spotted the figure of two men emerging from the road. I took two steps back, trying to understand what was happening. I was on the main road and no cars had stopped there. It didn't make sense that they were walking in the heavy rain. They were two men, smiling as if they were enjoying a sunny day. They were only wearing shorts and sneakers, indifferent to the water that was soaking them. The scene seemed surreal, and the rain distorted my vision, doubling the images. I had to take a step forward, trying to unravel that strange apparition in the storm. "Hey, do you live here?" I shouted, hoping for an answer that could explain the inexplicable. The two men, previously immersed in laughter, stopped abruptly, looked in my direction and stopped walking. It was at that moment that my eyes locked onto them and I realized something surprising. They were identical. A mirror copy of each other. The symmetry between the two was impressive, every gesture, every movement, echoed in the other as if they were reflections in a mirror. It was as if they were facing a strange and challenging puzzle. A feeling of bewilderment mixed with the torrent of rain that continued to fall. I was going into a momentary state of shock, trying to comprehend what I was seeing, while the idea that I might be going mad crossed my mind. They kept their gaze fixed on me, as if they understood the confusion they were creating. In the midst of that storm, my mind tried to form any plausible explanation for what I was seeing. However, the appearance of those two identical figures remained an indecipherable mystery, defying logic and all the natural laws I knew. "Are you high, miss?" My whole body shivered at the voice that came through the rain. They took two more long strides towards me and, for a brief moment, I had almost a vision of paradise in those two men. Their bodies were true sculptures, worthy of gods. Completely perfect, with no apparent imperfections. Their sculpted muscles stood out, outlining impressive shapes. Their dark hair fell messily over their foreheads, contrasting with intense green eyes that seemed mesmerizing. Their faces were marked by a unique expression, a combination of beauty and mystery that transcended any human standard. I was paralyzed at the sight of this dazzling duo, unable to look away from these extraordinary figures. They exuded an aura that seemed not to belong to this world, something that enveloped me and left me completely speechless. The rain continued to fall incessantly, as if even the sky was in ecstasy before that singular presence. The air was charged with electricity, a palpable tension that hung between us. However, my mind was still struggling to understand what was happening, how these perfect creatures could exist. For a moment, I felt like Alice in Wonderland, plunged into a world of fantasy and enchantment. Reality and the supernatural merged, and I was at the epicenter of this extraordinary experience, a perplexed witness to the inexplicable. Still under the influence of that vision, with a trembling voice, I continued with the question I had asked earlier. "Do you live here?" My gaze shifted between the two men, unable to find an answer that made sense in the face of the magnificent sight before me. "Look, Michael." One of them pointed to the trunk of the tree. "That trunk ended up in my way and I decided to stop and see if there was a U-turn or a detour. The key was inside the car." One of them laughed and the other seemed to get serious. "You shouldn't be driving in the rain. Didn't you hear the news?" The voice came out harsh. I opened and closed my mouth. "I'm not from here. In fact, I don't live here." One of them stepped forward and watched my face, seeming attentive to detail. I looked away. They were the same. Both of them. Even in their beauty and presence. "Can we help you, miss?" "Who are you?" The man laughed. Water dripped down his bare chest. Even in the rain, my mouth seemed to stay dry. "My name is Michael, that's my brother over there. Christopher. We're twin brothers."
