Chapter 2 Elara’s POV As I passed him, I couldn’t help the weight of his gaze on my form. He felt it too. The connection. “I’ll take her from here.” He said, cutting in front of the guard who escorted me. The guard observed him before he nodded and allowed him to show me in. The moment the door snapped shut behind us he grabbed my arms and snarled, “mate!” I snatched my hand away. “What are you doing here?!” I whispered, looking around the office. There was a couch, four big ones, and a table. It could be likened to the crown prince’s office, but I knew it wasn’t his office. He wouldn’t allow me in just like that. “I came to the capital to speed things up.” He said in a hushed tone as well. Amber's golden eyes held me in retribution. “You would get caught.” “Well I haven’t,” he retorted. Before me stood the rogue leader, Alaric Dante. He was a man without fear, his golden eyes were what succumbed his enemies to fear before his blade sank into their flesh. “I asked him to come to the capital.” We both turned to see the man who had dedicated his life to the rogue. To make sure that the royals fell and the werewolves of this pack found freedom. Remus. An alpha in one of the districts under the royal territory. “Alpha Remus.” We both bowed and stepped back. Holding him in surprise. I had also dedicated my life to make sure the royal family was down eight feet, never to rise again. They were evil, and ridding them of this land was what every werewolf sought. I had come to this ball with an intention, my food being the alpha heir to be. The dress and invitation I had was provided by Alpha Remus. The alpha from the district before me. District 5. There were six districts in total under our the alpha heir, Thornsley Wraith. The alpha king to be. “He can’t be here, he is risking putting himself in danger.” I stated but Alaric countered. “I can take care of myself.” “You should go back to the gang—they need you more than whatever this is,” Alaric said, scanning me with disapproving eyes at the dress and all the glam I’d been forced to wear to come to the party. “They don’t. Besides, I'm already chosen by the crown heir.” That seemed to have gotten him angry as he growled. “You are mine!” His possessiveness made my cheek heat up and made my stomach flutter, however Remus gingerly asserted the thing that made my heart stop in a beat, “I fear your relationship and mate bond will die here.” He announced to the shock of both of us. My mouth dropped to the ground. “What?!” “Alaric you will have to return home and take charge of everything back at the rogue ground, Elara will stay and undermine everything here whilst being married to Alpha Thornsley.” No, no, this wasn’t it. I can’t lose my mate for some stupid rebellion and movement. I looked at Alaric to refuse but he was surprisingly mute. Wh..at? “You can’t be serious. I should leave my mate for some stupid movement? That might not work?” I queried, baffled and surprised. My chest was burning up as the second ticked on. Mates were a lifetime, they were part of you. “Sacrifices have to be made, Elara. And this is one of them. The movement must be seen to the end. With you here, and Alaric’s force back at the district we are sure to win. And when we win you can both reunite.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and the fact that Alaric was silent made my blood run hot. “Both of you have to break your bond. I’m sorry but It’s necessary,” Remus turned to Alaric, “I will prepare your things to go back to the district.” With a brief tap on my shoulder and an intense gaze that told me to play my part and commit to my oath, he walked out. I couldn’t argue with him because this man was the reason I was still alive and my family. I owed him my life and so did all the rogues and those in my district. Alaric attempted to take my hand but I moved away from his reach, betrayed and hurt. “I’m sorry, Elara. But what I’ve suffered I don’t want you or my child to suffer the same thing. I can’t bring anyone under these circumstances. I’m sorry.” My heart squeezed shut from his words, grinding into powder. Tears pooled at the corners of my eyes. For a long time, I had the biggest crush on Alaric and now when I had the chance to be with him, it was stolen away from me. I pulled away from his grasp with tears streaming down my face, hurt seared down into my vitals and into my bones. Burning and chafing. He attempted to touch me again which was the time the door flung open to Alpha Thornsley. With his eyes fixated on me, Alaric stepped back. Each step was a jab to my gut. “Leave us,” Alpha Thornsley commanded. Alaric wanted to defile his orders, but he thought against it and stepped back till he was out of the door. I whipped my head to face Alpha Thornsley’s icy stare, glaring at him with enough venom to kill, “You can’t have me as your Luna! You can’t choose me!” His eyes observed me quietly like I was some worm for him to barely acknowledge not alone speak with me. That made me even more pissed. And his damn scent that made me feel dizzy. Why the hell could I smell him and why is the scent so f*****g intoxicating?! “I will not be your Luna. Why can’t you choose one of the prestigious ladies in the capital and take her as your Luna and bride?” I demanded. Suddenly my rage clicked into place, he was the reason I and Alaric wouldn’t be together, the reason why I was suffering, why we were all suffering. He caused this. The anger brewed so hot that I wanted to stab him here and now through the throat. Stand in his blood as life left his eyes and my face would be forever seared into his head. In this life and the next and the one after. His silence made me flare in anger. “I will not rule beside your evil ass.” “You will and you have no choice.” When he spoke, his voice was cold as ice, causing goosebumps to rise on my skin. I pushed past his hold on me nonetheless and spoke, “well how do you intend to do that?” After the question left my mouth I knew how stupid it was. He first held me in silent contemplation before he moved closer with precision and a predatory stalking. He loomed over me. His presence sucking the air right out of me. His shoulder was wide, easily filled into his garment, stretching it even. When he leaned in close to me, the tip of his nose almost touched mine, yet his undivided attention was straight into my soul then my eyes dropped to his lips. “Because you committed treason. You stole from the throne, talked down on the crown, disrespected the crown, and then laid hands on the crown. All this can claim your life by hanging with an arrow through your chest.” His threat hung in my own throat instead of his as I churned his unsaid words over and over again in my head. Treason. There was something about the way he spoke that promised me that he was far from joking. His stare made me understand that he was a man of his word. That he wouldn’t mind if I died here or not. And like the tyrant he was, he knew none would bat a lash at his actions. “I promise, I will kill you,” I said, word by word. “That is just another reason why you should die.” He grabbed my arm and yanked me close. So close that I felt his breath on my lips and the flavor from his mouth. My body still and my thighs tightened. “If you are going to kill me, do it when you have a chance.” He pulled me even closer so that my body was flush against his sending jolts of electricity through me. “Do it when you are close enough to me not to raise suspicion.” His eyes raked me in one swift glance, “If not, mind your tongue. It will get you killed before you get the chance to put the knife to my throat.” He shoved me away from his body and every enchantment broke. My throat burned from being parched for too long and my heart forgot to beat. He provided a paper from his pocket whilst I watched him, unable to blink, to breathe, to utter any word. He handed the paper to me. “Read and sign it.” I let my eyes run down the contract paper. I was to be his wife and Luna, rule beside him for three years. Show up in every gathering and play the part. No one must know of our deal and so on. His hand flashed before me with a feather and ink. I eyed the feather in his hand and then snatched it from him. Walked over to the table and signed the papers. I was doing this for the pack, for my family, my children, and for Alaric. We will win and I will end up with my mate. He left before me. I followed behind him after I collected the little composure I had left. Just then a servant boy passed a note to me. Another note. I didn’t like the thought of that. Don’t open it, I told myself. Even as my hand fumbled with the paper, unfolded it, and then saw the one thing that made my soul leave me and made my heart stop. Dead stop. “I Alaric Dante, reject you, Elara Voss, as my mate and partner.”
