[Kathy]
"And what makes you think I'd actually agree to this?"
"C'mon Kathy, it benefits both of us. You get to prove to your ex you're over him for good. And I get to remind my favorite rival exactly what he lost."
I opened my mouth to tell him he was insane.
But I scoffed instead.
"Not interested. I don't need you or anyone else to prove to Blair that I don't need him anymore."
I brushed past him and got into my car.
He leaned over my driver's window, "Think about it Kathy."
I threw the thought out the window the moment my wheels hit the road.
But he was back the next day, this time he was leaning against my car again, in front of my school apartment.
"That's it, I'm calling the cops on you."
"Wait! Kathy!" He called after me as I dashed right back into the apartment building.
"Kathy wait. Hear me out, would you?"
"I'm going to report you to the police."
We were already standing by my apartment's door.
"Go ahead."
My eyes lingered on him.
He stepped few feet away from me.
"But before you do, hear me out for sixty seconds."
"Why are you so obsessed with this, Wayne?"
"You have no idea how much I hate that boyfriend of yours—"
"Ex-boyfriend."
The corner of his lips pulled up. "Whatever. You Kathy, just handed me the easiest way to get under his skin without throwing a single punch."
"I'm not going to be a tool for your rivalry."
"No, you're an opportunity. There's a difference."
"And stop acting like you don't want this too. Alright forget Blair. But you still have the rumors to deal with. You know how this is Kathy, it's going to go on for months and trust me, you don't want to know what bad publicity does to a person."
"You can't run or hide from this forever Kathy. You have to get the last word. At least with this, you get to walk around campus with your head up instead of dodging them and the whispers."
The last word?
A part of me was already agreeing to it. The other half was trying to keep me from doing something reckless like agreeing on the spot.
I let out a breath.
Either way...
I opened the door.
His face beamed. He knew I was finally indulging him.
"Cool place you've got here. Small, but comfy." he said once he walked in.
Then he slumped onto my bed. "You live alone?"
I shut the door behind me. "Yes. Get off my bed."
He sat up, leaned on the headboard and crossed his legs making himself more comfortable.
"Urgh..." I uttered. And just sat on the bed. "What are we going to say once people start asking questions. How we met, how long we've been together, all of it."
"I think they'd fry me even more if it gets out that I'm already dating the rival team's captain a few days after breaking up with my boyfriend." I added.
He let out a throaty chuckle, that made me raise a brow at him.
"Too late, sweetheart. People already think that. You haven't been checking your phone lately, have you?" he asked.
True. I've been avoiding my phone too, ever since I found out that I'd gone viral.
"Look Kathy, when they ask we tell them the truth—The same thing that's going around. Right now, everyone thinks you kissed me to get a reaction out of Blair. True. They also think we decided to hit it off after that night."
"And if this narrative falls apart? If someone figures out it's a lie?"
"Then we deal with it. But it won't, because we're going to be convincing."
Something about the way he said convincing made my skin prickle.
I looked away first, annoyed at myself for what I was about to do.
"Say I actually consider this insanity. There should be rules."
"Rules? Sure. Lay them on me."
"Don't fall for each other."
"Easy."
"Don't get jealous. Not of exes, not of anyone."
"Wasn't planning on it."
"Good. Also, don't sleep together."
His eyebrow shot up, and a smirk formed on his fine lips. The combination of his silence and that stupid smirk stirred something inside me.
It made my toes curl nervously.
"No s*x! Got it?" I repeated.
"Wasn't on my list, but noted."
I swallowed.
"And the second one of us forgets this is fake, it's over. No hard feelings, no drama."
"No hard feelings," he repeated.
I stuck my hand out, businesslike, like we were closing some kind of deal instead of agreeing to lie to the world.
Wayne looked at my hand, then at me, that grin creeping back with something sharper underneath it.
"Deal?"
He took my hand, his grip firm but gentle, "Deal."
Then there was a knock on the door.
"Kathy? Kathy! Open up." Blair's voice came up.
I stood up from the bed at once.
"Oh my gosh, it's Blair." I didn't expect him to come look for me at my apartment.
I turned to Wayne who was still on my bed comfortably.
"You've got to hide."
"Why should I? I'm your boyfriend now remember. What better time than now, for Blair to find out?"
Urgh, this guy!
"I know you're in there, Kathy! Open up!" Blair continued to knock.
I opened the door, and shut it behind me, before Blair could even get a glance at what was inside.
"Is there a guy in there?" he questioned, with eyes that could literally burn me to ashes right now.
"Seriously?" I glared back at him. "That's not even your business anymore—"
"It is, I'm still your boyfriend. You broke up with me, but I never broke up with you, okay? You'd thank me later when your head's clear."
I snorted, "Are you for real? We're done Blair. What are you doing here? What do you want?"
He exhaled slowly, his hands settled on my waist and he ushered me closer to him.
His brown eyes focused on me.
"Enough Kathy. Don't be like this."
"Stop acting up already." he continued.
I pushed him away. "Go away, Blair."
"You seriously going to throw away what we have over this small issue."
Small issue?
My throat tightened. I turned away, trying to fight back my tears.
"You know, I'm still asking myself if I ever knew you—or Bree. Not once since that night have any of you apologized to me, and you didn't come here to do so, you just came here to save your face."
"Before becoming your girlfriend, I was your friend first Blair. I was your f*****g friend. But I guess even friends can betray and hurt each other like this too."
"Sorry," he said. "Since that's what you want, I'm sorry Kathy. Okay?"
A laugh escaped me.
When did he change this much? When did they change? Or maybe this was who they've always been and I was just too blind to see it, or they were just too good at hiding it.
I turned to go back into my apartment, but Blair forced his way in.
"Blair..."
He came face to face with Wayne, who was suddenly shirtless on my bed.
Has he finally lost his mind?—Why the f**k is he shirtless on my bed?
