Chapter 2

1034 Words
[Wayne] I should've been pissed. Instead, I was trying not to smile. The game was still ongoing when some crazy blonde girl stomped into the rink, and punched Blair Mascot. Then kissed me. In the middle of the biggest rivalry game of the season. In front of thousands of people. My shock soon turned to scorn, when I glanced over at Blair, and saw the look on his face. He was totally not having it. My lips pulled up in the kiss. I snaked my arms around the girl's waist and kissed her back. I pulled away first. Sea blue eyes stared back at me—wide and clear, her cheeks flushed, and for a second she just gazed at me like she couldn't believe what she'd done. Her attention went to Blair, before she exited the rink. Blair's eyes followed her till she disappeared. Then it landed on me. His face twitched not hiding his displeasure at all. I gave him a smug look irking him even more. I'd expected a lot of things from tonight. A hard-fought game. A few dirty plays from Blair. Maybe another argument with him after the final whistle. I hadn't expected his girlfriend to skate—or stumble, straight onto the ice, punch him in front of everyone, declare their relationship over... Then kiss me. The referee blew his whistle. Despite the chaos, the game had to continue. I skated back toward my side of the rink. Jason was waiting for me. He looked like he'd just witnessed the greatest entertainment of his life. "Dude." I ignored him. He followed. "Wayne." Still ignored him. "You just made out with Blair's girlfriend." "Ex-girlfriend." Jason snorted. I shook my head. "Get your head in the damn game." He laughed. The game resumed. And somehow, I managed to focus. Mostly. By the time the final whistle blew, I had a pretty good idea what was coming. Blackridge won. A comeback of 4-2. The locker room exploded. Music blasted from someone's speaker while everyone shouted over each other. We'd beaten Redmont. And, apparently, I'd also become the main character in some kind of campus-wide scandal. Jason threw an arm around my shoulders. "Two wins for tonight bro. We won the rivalry game, and you made out with Blair's girl." I shoved him away. "Ex-girl." "Right. His ex-girl." Someone across the locker room yelled, "Wayne! When's the wedding?" Everyone laughed. I grabbed a towel and threw it at him. "Shut up." But I was laughing too. "Tonight's party will be on another level. Hey Wayne, what do you say we invite your new girl over for the party huh?" I heard footsteps behind me. The room went strangely quiet. I turned. Blair. Still in his gear. Still pissed. He crossed the locker room toward me. I barely had time to react before he grabbed the front of my jersey. I looked down at his fists. Then back at him. His grip tightened. "Don't you even think about it, Wayne." "About what?" "You know exactly what." I smiled. "Actually, I don't." "Kathy." he said. There it was. "Maybe you should've thought about that before you screwed around on her." His fist tightened even more, "Stay away from her. She's mine." It almost made me laugh. He'd cheated on her. Humiliated her. And he's acting like she still belonged to him. I leaned closer. "She doesn't belong to you." His nostrils flared. I could feel the locker room watching. Blair finally shoved me backward. "Don't say I didn't warn you." Then he walked away. I straightened my jersey. A grin tugged at my mouth. She's yours? Now I want her even more. ... The next day morning, my phone wouldn't stop vibrating—Annoying the f**k outta me. I was still hungover from the celebratory party yesterday. My hands squeezed on my temples then eyes before I reached blindly for my phone. I sat up in my bed in the school apartment I shared with Jason and another of my hockey buddies—Marcus. Ninety-nine-plus notifications. Messages. Tags. Mentions. Group chats. What the— I unlocked my phone. The video from last night was the first thing that popped up at the top of my feed. The caption read: GIRL PUNCHES BOYFRIEND THEN KISSES RIVAL CAPTAIN MID-GAME. It was already at two hundred thousand views. And it was trending everywhere. I stared at the screen. Then I laughed. Someone had edited the punch in slow motion. Another person had added dramatic music to the kiss. There were already memes. One showed Blair getting punched with the caption: WHEN SHE FINALLY READS THE RED FLAGS. Another showed me kissing Kathy like it was the most delicious thing ever. BLACKRIDGE REALLY WON TWICE TONIGHT. I shook my head. People were insane. I scrolled through the comments. She's desperate. So true. I mean, she was literally dating him since high school—I heard. What a desperate attention seeker. She just wanted an excuse to kiss Wayne. Honestly? I would too. Blair fumbled so badly. Kathy is an icon. Girl, she punched him AND upgraded. Purr. This is the messiest thing I've seen all semester. I paused. That last comment had thousands of likes. Apparently, our little five-second kiss had become campus entertainment overnight. I continued reading the comments. THE RIVAL CAPTAIN'S FACE WHEN SHE KISSED HIM. Yeah, Wayne totally enjoyed it, hahahaha. I snickered. Imagine humiliating your boyfriend like that publicly. She's the worst! "The fuck..." I didn't find this one funny. I replied to the comment with my anonymous account; Hockeyaddict302: Hey! I heard Blair cheated on her. Honestly? I'd do the same thing she did. Blair deserved to be humiliated. But Kathy? The internet was having fun with it, but I remembered the look on her face yesterday. She looked like she'd just lost everything. I tossed my phone onto the bed. It buzzed again. Jason. BRO. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW GIRL. I typed back. She's not my girl. His response came almost immediately. Tell that to the internet. I didn't reply. Because, annoyingly, he had a point. Everyone already thought Kathy was my girl. Maybe I could use that. ***
