Chapter Thirty-Seven “He’s coming around,” says an unfamiliar voice. Female, I think. A few light slaps on my cheek jolt my brain fully awake. “Bax?” says another voice, also female. This one I recognize. “Natalie?” I slur, too weak to open my eyes. “It’s me.” The rush of relief at not being dead is so overwhelming that I almost slip back into unconsciousness. “Can you open your eyes for me?” says the other voice. I oblige, only to slam them shut again when the glare of a pen-light nearly renders me blind. “Jeez! Is that really necessary?” “Just checking your pupils for dilation, seeing if you have any head trauma.” Sighing, I crack my lids open again.
