Chapter Twenty-Three
Only a few cars grace the parking lot of Arbor Vista Elementary when Piper pulls the Altima into a spot. School let out about twenty minutes ago, as did Arbor Vista Middle School across the street, so apart from a few late-stayers and detentioneers picking up trash, there’s not much going on.
It’s not until we stroll onto the grounds that I realize I have no idea where Trina’s practice is being held. We collectively assume it’s the school auditorium, but all the buildings look the same and don’t seem to be labeled. After ten minutes of awkward searching, we’re flagged down by a broad-chested African-American man wearing track pants, a yellow polo, and a whistle around his neck. He introduces himself as Coach Epps, the P.E. teacher.
Once we assure him we’re wandering
