JENNY WAS QUICK TO act, even though Morgan was sure it was a lost cause. She radioed for help, and within half an hour, the Coast Guard was offshore searching. The waves had died down enough to allow for safe rescue, and the mist had all but disappeared, but it was to no avail. Dylan was lost to them.
Gabe sat on the shore watching the activities of the rescuers, his shoulders hunched in defeat. Morgan dropped to the sand to sit next to him, putting her arms around him in comfort, as one might a small child.
Others from the island came to the shore to see what was going on, standing in small circles watching and talking, knowing there would be no rescue.
