Chapter 3

804 Words
David had left in such a rush he hadn’t even had time to lock his study door. In the past, I’d always trusted him blindly. No matter what he might be hiding in there, I never let myself get curious. But now… Believing in his “love” again just felt like a joke. I took a deep breath and opened his laptop. The lock screen wallpaper was a picture of Sarah. I tapped the space bar. The password input popped up in the middle of the screen. Just as I was about to type in Sarah’s birthday, my wolf Lily suddenly spoke up in my head. “Jessica, do you really understand what you’re doing?” I didn’t answer. I just kept going until the password went through and the computer unlocked with a soft chime. Right in the middle of the desktop was a folder plainly labeled “David & Sarah.” No attempt to hide it. No password. When I clicked it open, the screen filled with photos. Pictures of Sarah. Couple pictures of the two of them together. The earliest timestamp was from one year ago. There was even a separate document dedicated solely to recording all of Sarah’s likes and preferences. And the things David had carefully tucked away into a private folder… Were their intimate videos. On the screen, Sarah was pouting, pretending to be mad, while David coaxed her in that soft, patient voice. “If it weren’t for those stubborn Elders insisting I marry my Fated Mate, I never would’ve married Jessica.” “Sarah, don’t be mad, okay? Once I fully inherit the Brown family Alpha position, I’ll kick every one of those old fossils off the council and marry you as my Luna.” “The Elders all have one foot in the grave and they still insist on breaking up people who actually love each other. They’re disgusting!” Sarah’s tone dripped with venom as she cursed them, but David didn’t get angry. He just patted her shoulder gently. “Sarah, I know this is hard on you. But my mom’s the worst to deal with. We’ll just let Jessica handle her. I can’t stand the thought of you getting yelled at.” As he spoke, he lowered his head and kissed Sarah. Within seconds, half their clothes were off, and his kisses fell in a trail down her skin… A storm of pinpricks erupted in my chest, like someone had driven a thousand needles into my heart. Rage and nausea crashed over me so hard I could barely think. He couldn’t bear for Sarah to suffer even a little. But leaving all the pain to me? That was fine. I forced myself to swallow down the bile rising in my throat, replayed the video from the beginning, and opened my phone’s camera to start recording his screen. Once I was done, I carefully closed everything and put his laptop back exactly the way it was. Then I walked straight into the bathroom, yanked off my wedding ring, and tossed it into the toilet. The rush of the flush echoed loud in the quiet room, and for the first time, a tiny sliver of relief slid into my chest. How ironic. I’d spent so much effort trying to keep the two of them from getting close. But in the end, no matter what I did, I still couldn’t escape the fate of being overshadowed and stripped of everything by Sarah. Why? I was the one who was David’s Fated Mate. Yet David didn’t love me. They’d fallen in love right under my nose, and I’d been kept completely in the dark. If he was a man who could be stolen away… then I didn’t want him anymore. I pulled out my phone and sent David a text. “I’ve thought about it. I’ll agree to the fake divorce. But what if you fall for Sarah for real while you’re helping her ‘find true love’?” Before he could respond, I fired off another message. “Add this into the divorce agreement: all Brown family resources and territory go to me. You walk away with nothing. If I don’t have that security, the divorce is off.” It didn’t take long for his reply to come in, every word practically etched with hatred. “Jessica, I didn’t think money was the only thing you cared about. You swear you ‘love’ me, but I knew it. You only married me to change your status.” I rolled my eyes, suddenly unable to understand how I’d ever been dumb enough to love this man so hopelessly. “Fine. Let me think about it.” “Okay.” I locked my screen and let out a long breath. Inside, everything felt hazy and strangely empty.
