As they strolled toward Chase's hidden haven, fingers entwined, Cali savored the warmth of his touch. Her attempts to concentrate faltered, consumed instead by the novelty of this shared intimacy—no one had ever held her hand like this before. It felt almost like they were a genuine couple.
"How much farther do we have to go? I thought it was nearby," she grumbled, using the question as a means of distraction.
"We're nearly there, princess. Have a little patience.” Chase replied, stealing a glance at her before teasing, "Feeling hot?"
"Hot? Seriously? No, I'm freezing out here. Can't you tell?" she retorted sharply, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
Chase came to an abrupt halt upon hearing her complaint. "Can't have you turning into an icicle under this unforgiving island sun," he remarked wryly.
He delved into his back pocket, producing a cap he kept handy and placed it snugly over Cali's head. "There, much better now."
His gesture rendered her momentarily speechless. She stood there, struck by his action. "Th...thanks," she stammered, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks as his gaze held hers.
"Gratitude, princess? Well, I'm honored," Chase quipped, his smile matching the brilliance of the sun reflecting off his bronzed complexion. "Come on, let's move before you turn into a lobster." He winked, playfully urging her forward, determined to distract her from further protests.
As they trekked for another ten minutes, they reached a rocky slope. Turning to look at Cali's bare feet and the delicate leather sandals she clutched, he remarked, "Alright, princess. Hop on my back."
"What?" Cali's bewilderment was evident.
What on earth was he suggesting?
"The only way in is by boat, which we don't have right now, or by foot, which, unfortunately, your footwear doesn't allow for. Lucky for us, I'm built like a tank and perfectly capable of carrying you. So, hop on, and let's get moving," he explained matter-of-factly, without so much as a blink.
"Thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather walk on my own two feet," Cali firmly declined, unmoved by Chase's insistence.
"On any other occasion, I'd happily oblige, but this is a seriously dangerous and rocky slope. Trust me, you don't want to take a tumble here. Hop on before I'm forced to carry you," Chase persisted, the silent standoff escalating between them. Eventually, it was Chase who relented. "Please."
Cali stood triumphant, her tone crisp and victorious. "Fine," she said.
As she perched on his back, securing her arms around his neck, Cali found herself enveloped in his warmth, adding to the already heated sensation, leaving her somewhat unsettled.
Chase hadn't exaggerated about the slope's danger and rockiness. Despite the precarious path, he held onto her securely, erasing any worry of slipping or falling. Instead of fear, she felt cocooned in his protection, a sense of safety prevailing over the jagged terrain. Each step he took was steady and sure, his presence a shield against any potential harm.
As her mind wandered with thoughts of him, she was jolted from her reverie when he came to an abrupt stop, declaring, "We're here," as he gently placed her down on the sandy beach.
Suddenly, all contemplation ceased as she gazed upon the surreal view that lay before her. "Wow."
The beach, a mosaic of sand and pebbles, nestled within a cove resembling a miniature amphitheater, was guarded by encircling rock formations. The calm, shallow waters displayed a mesmerizing array of blue hues, creating an illusion of being cradled within the embrace of the rocks.
"During sunset, it's almost as if the sun dives close to the rocky arch," Chase remarked, but Cali seemed lost in her own world.
Once more, she discarded her clothes and ventured into the pristine, crystalline water. The sensation was delightful—cool, serene, and utterly wonderful. Turning towards Chase, she playfully splashed the refreshing sea water at him. "What are you waiting for?" she beckoned.
Chase wasted no time, stripping off his T-shirt and shorts to reveal the swimming trunks he habitually wore underneath.
He approached Cali in the water with deliberate steps, his gaze fixed on her as she stood there, waiting for him to draw near. "You do realize this is a dangerous zone you're treading on," Chase remarked as he closed the distance.
Despite his warning, her smile persisted, a vision of serenity. Droplets of water trickled down her flawless skin as she remained stationary, a striking figure against the backdrop of the sea.
As he drew nearer, Chase felt his heart skipped a beat, an unfamiliar sensation that made him instinctively press his hand to his chest.
"Is that fear I hear?" Cali, never one to shy away from a challenge, moved closer until they were almost touching.
With a swift move, she silenced any retort from Chase, capturing his lips with hers. The first poolside kiss had been surprising, quick, and wild, but this time was something else entirely.
Today, she was all warmth and allure, like a fairy-tale princess pulling her prince into her realm. For a brief instant, Chase lost himself. Her taste and scent seemed to wrap around him, beckoning him into the riveting wonderland that was her essence.
Magic erupted when she touched her tongue to his. Hot, molten lava flared up inside of Chase as her lips melded with his perfectly. His fingers tangled in her hair, and their noses brushed together as their breaths mingled in a heated rhythm. Cali’s tongue worked its magic on his.
Chase wrapped her hands and legs around him as they kissed. He kissed her deep and hard. And their bodies and mouths became entangled in a web of lust and desire that was uniquely theirs.
As they emerged from their kiss, a mutual understanding seemed to blossom between them. Both desired each other, and the unspoken agreement was clear—they were going to have each other, no matter the circumstances.
But Chase hesitated to reveal his truth. They were still practically strangers, and in his mind, what difference did it make? He was still the same Chase, regardless of the weight of his last name.
Perhaps this vacation marked the end of their encounter, leaving no room for complications. So why not make the most of it, free from any entanglements or complexities?
"Still think I'm scared, princess?" Chase's voice dripped with desire, a raw intensity in his tone.
"I'm not sure. A kiss doesn't reveal everything," Cali retorted, her eyes smoldering with unmistakable hunger.
"I want you, Calista. Underneath, on top, any way we can make it happen—I'm all in," Chase confessed, urgency tingling in his words. "Right here, right now, with you wrapped around me—that's the only thing on my mind. Just need you to say yes."
The flush on her cheeks spoke volumes. No one had made her feel so wanted, so inherently feminine. Chase had a way of making her feel pliable, like she could surrender to his desires with just a look.
Her past dates had showered her with respect, but she knew it was all due to the legacy of her mother's legend. Yet, Chase seemed unfazed by it all, unconcerned about her family background. That indifference, that disregard for her lineage, only amplified her attraction towards him.
A warning bell chimed inside her when it came to him. It was like her heart was cautioning her about potential heartache, a sensation she'd never experienced with anyone else. He was different, and that frightened her.
Chase sensed the sudden shift in her, the invisible barrier that shut down the openness she'd shown moments before. "Tell me about this secret cove. Who else knows about this?" Cali's tone changed as she turned away from Chase, creating distance between them as she inquired.
"Everyone and no one," Chase responded to her query, trying to navigate the abrupt change in her attitude. Bafflement inched its way into Cali's expression as she turned to face him, seeking answers.
"The locals are aware of this spot, but they steer clear out of respect for its secrecy. Tourists have no clue it exists," Chase elaborated.
"Why do the locals avoid it then?"
"It's not a matter of being forbidden," Chase explained. "It's more about preserving the secrecy of this place. It's like an unspoken rule among them."
"I'm kind of lost here," Cali confessed, seeking clarification.
"It'll click someday," Chase reassured, holding back the truth for now. He refrained from explaining that people avoided the place because it belonged to him, the owner of this island. Despite not explicitly barring anyone, the unspoken reverence for the owner's sanctuary kept everyone at bay.
Caught between desire and confusion by Cali's abrupt change, he swam up to her side and gently guided her to face him. "You're dodging. Why?" His voice was soft yet probing. "You know you're winding up in my bed regardless. Admit it, the attraction goes both ways."
"Don't give yourself too much credit, buddy. You're not that appealing," Cali retorted, attempting to divert Chase's attention. Unfortunately, he saw through her ruse, seeing right past her words.
He held her gaze until she finally averted her eyes. "Doesn't quite work like that with me, princess. I'm not your average puppet," he stated with conviction.
"Whatever," she shrugged, maintaining her standoffish posture.
Leaning in close, he whispered into her ear, his voice low and intense, "No matter what games you're playing in your head, understand this: when I set my sights on something, I don't back down. I get what I want, no matter what."
