Chapter 1: The Awakening

The sun had barely risen over the floating village of Valtara when Lior stepped outside his humble home. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of dew on the grass and the faint aroma of freshly baked bread from the village’s bakery. It was a simple life—a life he had always known and, until recently, had grown to love. But today, there was something different in the air. Lior’s eyes darted up to the sky. As always, the great floating islands hovered above him, suspended by ancient magic. Valtara, like many of the other villages scattered across the sky, was anchored to a massive stone platform that drifted above an endless ocean of clouds. The villages were connected by skyways, woven from magic and metal, offering breathtaking views of the world below. But something felt off. Lior’s heart pounded in his chest, a strange sense of unease creeping up his spine. It was as though the wind had shifted, and the world was holding its breath. "You’re up early," a gruff voice called from behind him. Lior turned to see Garek, the village blacksmith, stepping out of the workshop. His weathered face broke into a smile as he wiped his hands on his apron. "You're usually still sleeping at this hour." Lior smiled weakly. "I couldn’t sleep. Something feels different today." Garek chuckled. "You’ve always been the one to notice the smallest changes, haven’t you? It’s just the wind. You’ll see." But Lior wasn’t so sure. He had never felt this way before. As much as he tried to shake the feeling, it clung to him like a second skin. Something was coming. Before he could voice his thoughts, a loud horn echoed from the center of the village. The sound of it was unmistakable—there was only one reason for such a call. The Celestian Order. Lior’s heart skipped a beat. The Order was known for its connection to the celestial powers, revered across the islands for their ability to predict the future, heal the sick, and manipulate the stars. They were the keepers of ancient knowledge, and their emissaries rarely visited the villages of the sky unless there was an urgent need. Lior’s thoughts immediately went to the mark on his wrist—the strange star-shaped glow that had begun to shimmer more vividly in the past few days. He had never told anyone about it, not even Garek. But now, as the horn blared again, he couldn’t ignore the feeling growing in his chest: something was about to change. "Stay here, Lior," Garek said sternly, his face clouded with concern. "The Order doesn’t come for nothing. There’s no reason for you to get involved." But Lior’s instincts told him otherwise. His feet moved before he could even think about it, pulling him toward the center of the village. The crowd had gathered, whispers circulating among the villagers. Lior made his way through the sea of people, his heart thudding in his chest. He was drawn to the Celestian emissaries, figures cloaked in long, flowing robes adorned with symbols of the stars and the moon. Their presence was as awe-inspiring as it was intimidating. A tall figure stepped forward, his eyes glowing with a faint, celestial light. The man’s gaze locked onto Lior, and his lips curved into a knowing smile. "You," the emissary said, his voice carrying the weight of the heavens themselves. "You are the one we’ve been seeking." The crowd fell silent. Lior felt his throat tighten. His mark—the star-shaped symbol on his wrist—flared to life, glowing brighter than ever before. Panic rose in him like a tidal wave, but he couldn’t pull his gaze away from the emissary’s penetrating stare. "What… what do you mean?" Lior stammered, his voice barely a whisper. The emissary extended a hand toward him, and the crowd parted like the waters of an ocean. "You are the Starborn, the one chosen to wield the celestial powers. The mark on your wrist is a sign—an ancient seal that signifies your place in the stars." Lior’s breath caught in his throat. Starborn? The stories—legends, really—that his parents had told him as a child suddenly flooded his mind. They spoke of a great prophecy, one that foretold the rise of a Starborn who would control the powers of the stars and save the world from a terrible celestial storm. But those were just stories, weren’t they? Fairy tales meant to inspire hope. But as the emissary’s words settled in, Lior felt a deep, undeniable truth ripple through him. This wasn’t a story. This was his destiny. The crowd murmured in hushed voices, their eyes fixed on Lior. He felt the weight of their gazes, but it was nothing compared to the pressure building within him. His body trembled, as if his own powers were awakening for the first time. "You must come with us," the emissary said, his voice gentle but firm. "There is no time to waste. The celestial storm is coming, and only you can stop it." Lior’s mind raced. The storm. He had heard rumors of a growing darkness in the sky, an approaching force that threatened to swallow everything in its path. But he had never imagined he would be the one to face it. "What if I don’t want to go?" Lior asked, his voice shaking, the fear finally bubbling to the surface. The emissary’s expression softened. "You don’t have a choice. The stars have chosen you. It is your destiny." Lior’s heart pounded as he looked around the village. He saw the faces of the people who had raised him, who had trusted him to remain the simple, unremarkable boy they had always known. Now, it seemed, that life was slipping away from him. Garek appeared beside him, his rough hand resting on Lior’s shoulder. "You don’t have to do this," Garek said quietly. "I raised you as my own, and I know you better than anyone. But if this is your destiny, you must follow it. No one can change fate." Lior’s eyes filled with tears, but he didn’t wipe them away. He understood now—his past, his purpose, everything had led him to this moment. It wasn’t a choice anymore. The stars had chosen him, and he had no choice but to follow the path that awaited him. Lior nodded slowly, his voice steady. "I’ll go." The emissary smiled, as though he had known all along. "Then your journey begins now, Starborn." With that, Lior took his first step toward a destiny that would change everything—his world, his heart, and the very stars themselves.
