The warmth of Kaela’s lips still lingered on Lior’s skin as they lay beneath the celestial glow of the Sky Gardens. The night had brought them closer than ever, a moment of quiet before the inevitable storm.
But peace never lasted long.
A distant boom echoed through the Spire. The ground beneath them trembled.
Lior sat up immediately, his senses sharpening. “Did you hear that?”
Kaela was already on her feet, scanning the sky. “Yeah. And I don’t think it’s fireworks.”
They bolted out of the gardens, running through the stone corridors of the Spire. The distant echoes of raised voices and hurried footsteps filled the halls.
The war had come to them.

The First Strike
By the time they reached the central courtyard, the sky was ablaze. Dark figures descended from the clouds—cloaked warriors riding on shadow beasts, their forms twisted and shifting like living nightmares.
Lior’s blood ran cold. He had seen drawings of them in the ancient tomes—Varos’ enforcers.
A deep voice boomed across the Spire. “Deliver the Starborn. Surrender now, and your suffering will be swift. Resist, and you will know despair.”
Lior’s jaw tightened.
Kaela glanced at him. “You have a talent for making powerful enemies.”
Before he could respond, the first wave of attackers hit.
Celestial warriors surged forward, clashing against the shadowy invaders. Magic flared—blades of light meeting whips of darkness. The battle had begun.
Lior turned to Kaela. “We need to get to the council chambers. If the Spire’s leaders are taken out, this fight is over before it begins.”
Kaela smirked. “Finally, a plan I can get behind.”
They sprinted through the chaos, dodging falling debris and stray spells. A warrior lunged at them from the shadows, his spear aimed at Lior’s heart.
Instinct took over.
Lior raised his hand. Celestial energy crackled through his veins. A surge of starlight erupted from his palm, sending the enemy flying backward.
He barely had time to register what he had done before Kaela grabbed his arm, pulling him forward. “Come on, hero. No time to admire your own power.”

A Battle of Light and Shadow
They reached the council chambers, only to find the entrance blocked by a wall of writhing darkness. The shadows twisted, forming into a massive guardian—a monstrous creature with glowing red eyes and jagged claws.
Kaela exhaled. “Great. A big one.”
Lior squared his shoulders. “We take it down together.”
She grinned. “Wouldn’t have it any other way.”
The creature lunged, its claws slicing through the air. Lior dodged left, while Kaela rolled right, her twin daggers flashing.
Lior focused, channeling his power. He could feel the celestial energy, pulsing like a heartbeat. He unleashed a blast of pure light, but the creature absorbed it, twisting the magic into darkness.
It laughed.
Lior’s stomach dropped. “It’s feeding on my power.”
Kaela cursed. “Then stop giving it a meal!”
She dashed forward, slicing at the creature’s legs. The shadow beast howled but didn’t fall.
Lior clenched his fists. If light wasn’t enough… then maybe balance was the key.
He closed his eyes. Instead of pushing his power outward, he pulled it inward.
The creature hesitated. The shadows around it flickered.
Lior opened his eyes. “Kaela—now!”
She didn’t hesitate. She leapt, spinning through the air. Her blades sank into the creature’s chest.
Light and shadow collided in a final burst of power.
The guardian shattered.
The darkness around the council chamber doors dissipated.
Lior steadied himself, his breath ragged. Kaela landed beside him, grinning. “Not bad.”
He exhaled. “We’re not done yet.”

The Betrayer
They burst into the council chambers, expecting to find the Spire’s leaders coordinating the defense.
Instead, they found a m******e.
The council members lay motionless, their celestial robes stained with darkness. The air was thick with the scent of burning magic.
And at the center of it all…
The Emissary.
Lior’s heart clenched. “No…”
The Emissary turned, his expression unreadable. “Ah. Lior. You made it.”
Kaela stiffened beside him. “Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.”
The Emissary sighed, as if this was all an inconvenience. “I did warn the council that resisting Varos was foolish. They refused to listen.”
Lior’s hands trembled. “You… betrayed us.”
The Emissary met his gaze, calm as ever. “I did what was necessary. Varos is coming. This war is already lost. Better to survive than die for a lost cause.”
Rage surged through Lior’s veins. “You were my teacher.”
The Emissary smiled. “And I still am.” He extended a hand. “Come with me, Lior. Varos will spare you. You have power. A place beside him.”
Kaela snorted. “Yeah, that sounds like a hard pass.”
The Emissary ignored her, his eyes locked on Lior. “You’ve seen the truth, haven’t you? The celestial power is not just light—it is also shadow. You have the potential to wield both.”
Lior’s breath was shallow. He had felt it. The way his power had shifted in battle, the way he had pulled the darkness rather than fought it.
The Emissary saw his hesitation and pressed on. “Light alone cannot win this war. But together, we could shape the future. No more meaningless battles. No more suffering.”
Lior wanted to believe him.
But then he looked at the bodies of the council. At Kaela, who had stood beside him through everything.
He clenched his fists. “You’re wrong.”
The Emissary’s expression darkened. “A shame.”
In an instant, he attacked.

Shattered Trust
The Emissary moved like lightning. Lior barely had time to raise a shield of celestial light before a dark blade slashed toward him.
The impact sent him stumbling back.
Kaela lunged, her daggers flashing, but the Emissary caught her wrist, twisting her arm behind her back.
She gritted her teeth. “Lior—do something!”
Lior roared, unleashing a shockwave of power. The force threw the Emissary back, giving Kaela enough time to break free.
The Emissary steadied himself, brushing dust from his robes. “Impressive.”
Lior’s heart pounded. He knew they couldn’t win this fight—not yet.
He met Kaela’s gaze. They understood each other without words.
They had to run.
With a final burst of celestial energy, Lior collapsed part of the chamber wall. The distraction was enough.
He grabbed Kaela’s hand. They ran.

A New Path
By the time they reached the lower levels of the Spire, the battle was still raging. Warriors fought desperately to hold the line. The sky was thick with smoke and fire.
Kaela gripped his arm. “We need to get out of here.”
Lior hesitated. “We can’t just leave them—”
Kaela’s gaze softened. “Lior… If we die here, there’s no one left to stop Varos.”
He hated that she was right.
Swallowing hard, he nodded. “Then let’s go.”
They slipped through the chaos, heading for the outer gates.
As they ran, Lior looked back at the Spire—the only home he had known since leaving Valtara.
It was burning.
But he wasn’t just Lior of Valtara anymore.
He was the Starborn.
And he would rise again.
