The detectives and the two women drank coffee on Bonnie Hemming's back porch. They had been silent for some minutes, each lost in their own thoughts.
"What happened to these so-called witnesses?" Gary asked. "Or were they just a fiction?"
"You're asking a very good question, Agent Mason," Kathleen replied, "but you have to understand that no one there that night would be likely to admit to illegal gambling. The incident was just something like a whisper that was passed from ear to ear. No one owned to having started it. But it spread like the 'flu, till most everyone had it, or knew someone with it. You detectives might dismiss it as almost impossible to believe, but I can tell you things were never the same after that night. And even stranger things started happening.
