But not slow. --- She wasn’t hesitating. --- She refused to. --- The elevator doors opened before she reached them. --- Of course they did. --- Mara stepped inside without breaking stride. --- No button pressed. No question asked. --- It moved anyway. --- Up. --- Her reflection stared back at her again. --- But this time— She didn’t look away. --- “You’re doing this on purpose,” she said quietly. --- Silence. --- Then— --- “Yes.” --- Her jaw tightened. --- “Why?” --- A pause. --- Then— --- “Because you keep coming back.” --- Mara’s fingers curled slightly at her sides. --- “That doesn’t mean anything.” --- “It does.” --- The elevator slowed. --- Stopped. --- The doors opened. --- She stepped out. --- And this time— He was already there. --- Adrian Voss stood in the center of the room, not near the window, not turned away. --- Waiting. --- That— That was new. --- Mara slowed. Just slightly. --- “You’re predictable,” she said. --- “And you’re here,” he replied. --- A beat. --- Neither of them moved. --- Then— She stepped forward. --- So did he. --- The distance between them disappeared faster this time. --- Too fast. --- Mara stopped first. --- But not far enough. --- Her breath caught— Just slightly. --- “You shouldn’t have called me back,” she said. --- “I didn’t.” --- Her eyes narrowed. --- “You didn’t have to.” --- Silence. --- That was true. --- And that— That was the problem. --- Adrian stepped closer. --- Mara didn’t move. --- Not back. Not away. --- She held her ground. --- “You’re testing something,” she said. --- “Yes.” --- “What?” --- A pause. --- “You.” --- Her pulse ticked up. --- “That’s not going to end well.” --- “For who?” --- Silence. --- Mara didn’t answer. --- Because she didn’t know. --- And that— That unsettled her more than anything else. --- “You said earlier,” he continued, his voice lower now, closer, “that I was crossing a line.” --- Her breath slowed. Controlled. --- “You are.” --- Another step. --- Now— There was no space left. --- “I want to know where it is,” he said. --- Her chest tightened. --- “You don’t.” --- “Why?” --- Her voice dropped slightly. --- “Because once you find it… you won’t stop.” --- A pause. --- Then— --- “You think I don’t already know that?” --- Her breath caught. --- That— That wasn’t reassurance. --- That was intent. --- Mara swallowed slowly. --- “You’re not as in control as you think you are,” she said. --- “I don’t need to be.” --- A beat. --- “Not with you.” --- Her pulse spiked. --- “That’s a mistake.” --- “Then show me.” --- Silence. --- The air between them shifted again. --- Closer. Hotter. Heavier. --- Mara became aware of everything at once— --- The space between their bodies. The way his gaze didn’t move. The way her own breathing had changed. --- “You need to step back,” she said quietly. --- “Or?” --- Her fingers curled slightly. --- “Or this changes.” --- A pause. --- Then— --- “Good.” --- That word again. --- Mara exhaled slowly. --- “You don’t understand.” --- “No,” he said. --- A beat. --- “I do.” --- And then— --- His hand moved. --- Slow. Deliberate. --- Not fast enough to startle— But not slow enough to ignore. --- Mara’s breath caught. --- His fingers stopped— Just before touching her. --- Close enough that she felt it. --- The heat. The shift in air. --- “Last chance,” she said quietly. --- “For what?” --- “To stop.” --- A pause. --- Then— --- “No.” --- Her pulse jumped. --- Sharp. Immediate. --- His fingers moved closer. --- A fraction. --- And then— --- Stopped. --- Again. --- Mara didn’t move. --- Didn’t breathe. --- Didn’t step back. --- Because stepping back meant losing something. --- And she wasn’t sure what that something was. --- “Why aren’t you moving?” he asked quietly. --- Her voice came out lower than she expected. --- “Because I don’t need to.” --- A pause. --- Then— --- “Wrong.” --- His hand shifted— Closer— --- And this time— --- It almost happened. --- Almost. --- Until— --- A sharp sound cut through the room. --- A notification. --- Loud. Abrupt. --- Breaking everything. --- Mara stepped back instantly. --- Space returned. --- Cold. Sudden. --- Her chest rose sharply. --- “What was that?” she asked. --- Adrian didn’t answer immediately. --- His gaze shifted—just slightly. --- To the screen behind her. --- That was all it took. --- Mara turned. --- The screen lit up. --- A name flashed. --- Unknown. --- But the message— --- Wasn’t. --- We found her. --- Silence dropped. --- Heavy. Unavoidable. --- Mara’s pulse spiked. --- “That’s not you,” she said. --- “No.” --- One word. --- Cold. --- Controlled. --- Dangerous. --- Mara turned back to him. --- Something had changed. --- Not the tension. --- Something deeper. --- “What does that mean?” she asked. --- A pause. --- Then— --- “It means,” Adrian said quietly, --- “They’re closer than I expected.” --- And for the first time— --- Mara realized— --- She wasn’t the only one watching anymore.
