Episode 11: The Nightmare

239 Words
I heard him before I saw him. Screams. Breaking wood. It was 3am and I was on night duty, cleaning the halls. The noise came from Damian's room. "Alpha?" I knocked. No answer. The screaming got worse. I pushed the door open. Damian was on the floor. Sweat poured down his face. His hands were clenched like he was fighting something. "Alpha!" I ran to him. "Wake up!" He thrashed and grabbed my wrist. His grip was like iron. "Emma! Run!" he growled in his sleep. My heart stopped. The little girl from the photo. "Alpha, it’s me. Luna. Wake up." His eyes snapped open. Silver and wild. For a second he didn’t recognize me. Then he did. He let go of me like I burned him. "Get out." His voice was raw. "But you were—" "GET OUT!" I scrambled back, tears in my eyes. As I reached the door, his voice stopped me. Quiet. Broken. "She died because of me." I turned. Damian was sitting up now, head in his hands. The feared Alpha looked small. "My sister," he whispered. "Rogues attacked our pack 5 years ago. I was supposed to protect her." He looked at me. "I failed." No wonder he was cold. No wonder he rejected mates. I wanted to comfort him. But I was just the Omega he rejected. So I just whispered, "I’m sorry, Alpha." And left him alone with his ghosts.
