I didn’t sleep that night.
How do you sleep after the man who called you a mistake holds you like you’re the only thing keeping him breathing?
By morning, the whole pack knew.
Gossip spreads faster than fire in the Alpha house.
Whispers followed me down the hallway.
"Did you see them last night?"
"The Alpha in her room? At 2am?"
"She’s not just staff anymore."
I kept my head down. Worked faster. Spilled nothing.
Until lunch.
Damien walked into the dining hall.
The room went silent.
And then he did something he’s never done.
He didn’t sit at the Alpha table.
He walked straight to the staff table.
To me.
Set his tray down.
Sat.
Every eye was on us.
He didn’t look at me. Just started eating.
But his knee brushed mine under the table.
And he didn’t move it away.
Damien: "The steak is dry today."
That was it. That was his public statement.
My heart was pounding so loud I was sure they could hear it.
Because everyone understood what this meant.
The Alpha just chose a side.
And it was mine.
After lunch, his Beta, Kade, cornered me by the kitchens.
Kade: "You need to be careful, girl. The Luna families are furious. And Damien? He’s never done this before. For anyone."
He walked away before I could answer.
That evening there was a knock on my door.
Not Damien.
A package.
No name. No note.
Just inside: a silver necklace.
A wolf pendant.
The symbol of the Alpha’s mate.
And underneath it, folded paper with 3 words in Damien’s handwriting:
"Wear it tomorrow."
