The next morning, hell broke loose.
Ava was waiting for me in the kitchen with her arms crossed. "So," she sneered. "The Alpha called you by name, huh?"
My stomach dropped. Someone saw. Someone told her.
"Did you think he likes you?" She laughed, sharp and ugly. "You’re just a toy to him. A rejected toy."
She shoved a bucket of dirty water at me. "The dungeons need cleaning. Go."
The dungeons. Nobody went there unless they were being punished.
I carried the bucket down the cold stone stairs. The air smelled like mold and blood. Chains hung from the walls.
"Need help?"
I spun around.
Damian was standing at the bottom of the stairs. No shirt. Training pants. Sweat on his skin.
"Alpha," I whispered, dropping into a bow. Water splashed everywhere.
"What are you doing down here?"
"Ava told me to clean, Alpha."
His eyes narrowed. "Did she now."
He walked past me and kicked the bucket over. Water flooded the floor.
"You're done."
"But Alpha, I’ll be punished if I don’t—"
"You won't."
He grabbed my wrist and pulled me up the stairs. His grip was warm. Too warm.
When we reached the kitchen, Ava was there. Her face went pale when she saw him holding me.
"Alpha, I was just—"
"Touch her again," Damian said quietly. "And you’ll be the one cleaning the dungeons."
He let go of me and walked out.
Ava stared at me with pure hatred.
I had just made an enemy for life.
