The story opens with Jinn Hino kneeling in a lonely cemetery, his fingers brushing the engraved names on two tombstones.
"Mom, Dad... It’s July 31st, your son just turned nineteen. You must be proud of me, right?" Jinn’s bittersweet smile hid the turmoil within him.
"I’ve done my best to survive these last seven years. You raised me strong, so don’t worry. Hector and Flo have been there for me." His voice wavered slightly as he mentioned Hector, his father’s business partner, and Flo, Hector’s daughter and Jinn’s girlfriend of three years. Seven years ago, when tragedy struck and Jinn lost his parents, Hector took him in, offering solace amidst the storm.
Jinn checked his watch, his expression shifting to urgency. "Time to go." Mounting his Harley Davidson, he roared off, the cemetery shrinking into the distance.
Jinn soon reached a secluded forest trail. Dismounting, he embarked on a long hike, the sound of crunching leaves and chirping birds accompanying him. Thirty minutes later, he arrived at a waterfall so mesmerizing it seemed plucked from a fairy tale. Without hesitation, he stepped behind the cascade, revealing a hidden den. Inside were signs of life—makeshift bedding, tools, and a faint flicker of ember in a stone hearth.
"You’re just in time," a gravelly voice called out. From behind hanging blinds emerged Master Young, an old hermit with an aura of mystery.
"Master! Is it happening? Is it time?" Jinn’s excitement was palpable.
"Calm yourself, boy," Master Young grumbled, giving him a light smack on the head. He then carefully opened a bamboo basket, revealing a crimson egg radiating a fiery glow.
The egg began to tremble violently, cracks spreading across its surface as the temperature spiked. Flames licked at the basket’s edges.
"Is that… normal?" Jinn asked, alarmed.
"Normal? Maybe. I think," Young muttered, equally unsure.
A deafening screech shattered the air as the egg split open, a burst of orange light illuminating the den. Rising from the shards was a creature of legend: a Phoenix. Its feathers shimmered like molten gold, and its eyes burned with ancient wisdom.
Young stumbled back, his voice shaking. "A Phoenix—the bird of kings. This... this hasn’t happened in ten thousand years." He gazed at the awe-struck Jinn. "The ancient texts spoke of this: the Phoenix chooses a vessel, one destined to wield immense power. Power to save... or destroy." His words hung heavy in the air.
Jinn’s mind reeled. Why him? What did this mean?
As his thoughts swirled, Young nudged him toward the den’s entrance. "Look outside, boy."
Jinn stepped out to see the moon, blood-red and ominous, casting an eerie glow over the forest.
"It’s the Crimson Moon," Young explained. "A sign—the Phoenix has come to mark a turning point for the world."
Before Jinn could process it all, the Phoenix coiled itself into a ball and fell asleep.
Jinn glanced at his watch again. "The moon? Oh no—I’m late!" Racing back through the forest, he sped off on his motorcycle, the events at the den a blur in his mind.
Back at home, he was greeted by a lively party. Flo greeted him with a teasing smile. "Nice of you to join us, Mr. Fashionably Late."
"I’ll be quick," Jinn replied, rushing upstairs to clean up. By the time he returned, the party was in full swing. Laughter, music, and clinking glasses filled the air. His friends from university cheered, dragging him into their circle.
Hours later, Jinn woke to a scene of drunken chaos. He rubbed his temples, his thoughts snapping to one thing: Flo. Searching for her, he ascended the stairs to the study, pausing when he heard voices.
"How much longer do I have to keep up this stupid charade?" Flo’s voice dripped with disdain. "Pretending to like that i***t Jinn is exhausting."
Jinn’s blood ran cold. His heart pounded as he pressed closer to the door.
"Stop complaining," Hector’s voice growled. "You’ll stay close to him until the plan is complete. I didn’t kill his parents for you to ruin everything."
Jinn burst into the room, rage and betrayal etched across his face. "What did you just say?"
"Boy, you should’ve pretended you didn’t hear," Hector sneered.
"You killed my parents? Flo, was this all a lie?" Jinn’s voice cracked.
Flo smirked. "Who do you think planned it?"
Overwhelmed, Jinn lunged at Hector, only to be thrown across the room by an invisible force. Hector’s power was unlike anything Jinn had seen. Bruised and defeated, Jinn staggered to his feet, hatred burning in his eyes.
"I’ll kill you both," he vowed, limping out of the house.
He rode through the night, eventually collapsing at Young’s den. The old master revived him, listening as Jinn recounted the betrayal.
"What will you do now?" Young asked solemnly.
"I’ll destroy them," Jinn said, his voice steely.
At that moment, the Phoenix stirred. It rose, pressing its forehead to Jinn’s, as if bonding with him. Without warning, it flew off, urging them to follow.
Their journey led them to Silent Valley, a place of haunting legends. As they traveled, a hidden path unfurled before them, leading to an enormous castle wreathed in storm clouds. It was foreboding yet strangely familiar.
"This will be our sanctuary," Jinn declared.
From the shadows, a voice emerged. "And I will help you seek vengeance."
The Phoenix engulfed itself in flames, transforming into a striking woman with a commanding presence. "I am Nyx," she announced. "And I will make you king."
