“Gloria! We’re taking fire!” I cried, hoping she’d have a better perspective and could tell me where to target my frustration. “It’s the APE!” she shouted. “They’ve got a mortar on the back!” I really should have accounted for that. It was stupid to think something that size would only have weapons limited to line-of-sight targeting. I’d been confident I had shut them down by blowing out their left tread, when really, I’d just inconvenienced them and given them an excuse to remain behind the cover of the ridgeline.
