Chapter 10
MAYA'S POV
"That's okay," Maya said quickly. "I'm really not interested in dating right now."
"You say that now, but…"
"She said she's not interested," Ethan said suddenly, his voice sharp.
Everyone turned to look at him. Vanessa blinked in surprise.
"I was just trying to help," Vanessa said.
"She doesn't need help." Ethan set down the vanilla extract harder than necessary.
"Can we just finish shopping?"
An awkward silence fell over the group. Vanessa's smile was strained now, and Maya felt a confusing mix of satisfaction and guilt.
They finished shopping in near silence, checked out separately (so much for the race), and headed to the parking lot.
"Well, that was fun!" Vanessa said with forced brightness. "We should do it again sometime."
"Sure," Maya lied.
