The drive home was twenty minutes. Roman sat in the back seat and watched the city pass and said nothing and did not pick up his phone. The driver did not speak. The city outside the glass was doing its late-evening thing. He sat with what he was carrying, which was three words said to him at a covered entrance by a woman who had not been required to say them. I read it three times.
