CHAPTER 20In the Boar’s Head pub at Mile End, three men were holding a night council. They were Bill Mulligan, Andy Wagstaff, and Michael Barlow; all of them from Harvey Simpson’s work gang. Harvey had been progressively deteriorating, which was a real problem to the three men since much of their regular work and therefore income came through Harvey. Together, they envisaged the unpleasant situation when Harvey would go into another drinking binge, as had happened a couple of times earlier, and subsequently end up again in rehab. And when that occurred, where would they go for work except the Jobcenter.
Over the years, Harvey had become to them their brain, eyes, and hands because Harvey knew about paperwork. Harvey could negotiate contracts, and he could understand agreements, and he had
