Chapter Twenty-EightA few people had heard the loud reverberations in the stairwell and, guessing correctly that the sounds were gunshots, had alerted the hospital's security staff, but no one had connected the shooting to D'Angelo before he escaped unnoticed. By the time anyone looked inside the stairwell, both he and Paul had already disappeared and blended into the throngs of people in the hallway outside. A nurse approached the replacement policeman almost immediately after he entered the hospital and told him about the gunfire, and Paul could see a worried look etched on his face before he turned and sprinted toward elevator.
