Finally River reveals herself to Clara's family. The silence was deafening. The Alpha's honey eyes pierce through Clara's. The shining white coat, well known among the Black Oak pack present. 'She is still our daughter, Tobias' Crystal's wolf, Ember spoke through mind link to her mate.
'I know that, we know that' The Luna swishes her thick dark tail at her mate.
"Welcome daughter of Suntra, how may we address you?" The Alpha speaks to his daughter's wolf form.
" I am River, descendant of the Black Oak pack, daughter of Suntra. Thank you for the unbridled kindness you have shown Clara in her earlier years" River bows deeply to the Alpha, a sign of her allegiance. Content with the introductions, the Alpha signals for his family to join their daughter for their first run.
Clara had never felt such freedom before, the air she breathed as her wolf ran freely felt fresher than her own lungs had felt before. Such motion seemed effortless. She was her wolf and her wolf was her. But something had been bugging her the entire time they ran through the woods, an unshakable scent. It wasn't the Alpha or Luna's, it wasn't Saddie's or Lyric's either. Her family however smelt mildly different to their own scents, and the smell was unbearably delicious. "Are you happy to head back to the house?"
The change back was almost as painful as the initial shift. Except it was quicker and burned less. Clara pants. "Thank you" ushering to her wolf. She feels River motion in circles finally settling to rest in her mind. Her family join her sides, patting her back and hugging her.
"You killed it girl!" Out of them all Lyric beamed the most, Clara knew as soon as she changed she wasn't a Suntra descendant. Secretly, it broke her heart, but the welcoming from her family had softened the blow.
"I never wanna be in that much pain again, please" Saddie half laughs.
"It won't be as bad next time, I promise. But it still hurts, even for us seasoned professionals" Clara groans, at least it won't be as bad she reminds herself.
The closer they get to the house, the more her nose twitches, the scent she'd smelt while River ran becoming more prominent, the smell of wild berries and pomegranate. Clara gulps, not daring to believe what she suspects, not daring to show in the company of her family what deep down she already knows. "Happy Birthday Clara" Lyric hugs her friend. "You'll have to wait for your presents in the morning" She smiles sweetly before leaving. The Suntra pack was big, some of us had cars to get around the community but luckily for Clara and Lyric they lived only minutes away. Saddie kisses Clara's forehead.
"Well done, lil' sis. And a very Happy Birthday" she squeezes her younger sister's hand before leaving in Lyric's footsteps. Taking a hold of their daughter, the Alpha and Luna get inside ready for bed.
Crystal had her suspicions of her youngest daughter's mate, she wasn't about to let her self or her mate be around for it. As much as Clara was their pup, blood was the only factor in changing a mate's fate. Now they were certain Clara wasn't even Suntra, the chance their son may be her mate increased. Saying good night, they leave for bed. The young wolf pants heavily, finally unable to control herself. The amount of energy it had taken her to keep a straight face and not crumble the closer they got home had been as close to unbearable as the shift. All logic had fizzled away, and any thoughts the Suntra daughter had were unfathomable.
The scent of her mate had become intoxicating, to the point where Clara had lost control of the motions of her feet, her wolf paced back and forth repeating the words 'mate'
"But he's our brother?!" Her whisper to the wolf is almost inaudible.
'He isn't, he is Suntra, we are Black Oak' An arguement was about to erupt but both Clara and River turn silent as the scent becomes stronger. Standing at the top of the stairs, James' features are unseen, masked by the light shining behind him.
"Mate" James' husky tones were buttery to Clara. The she wolf's heart race quickens, she still feels sickly and slick from sweat from her first shift. There's no room in her head to feel insecure, all she wants to do is become engulfed by her mate.
"Mate" Clara's tones are sensual, a tone never having been used on James before. He strides down the stairs briskly, his features finally visible. His own breath caught in his chest, she smells like patchouli and lemon grass. No scent has ever compared to it.
James takes a step back, Hunter his wolf yelps, disapproving of his actions. "We can't" His chest heaves unable to string a sentence anymore, he can't reject her. Ever since his 18th his feelings towards her had changed. It's like his wolf had known all along she would be his mate. The Goddess of the moon was playing a terrible trick on them. Without thinking Clara takes a hold of James' hand, guiding him outside. She was exhausted from her first change but the electricity from his touch was more than enough to push her to show him her wolf. River paces in circles, ready to meet her wolf mate, willing her self to be strong enough to shift again. "Clara what are you doing, if our parents find out..." James trails off cringing at the words. But he knows like every other wolf in their world it's impossible to have a mate that is related. The pit in his stomach deepens. Grateful in fact knowing it can't be true, they aren't blood.
Clara strips off quickly and forces her self to shift, the pain is excruciating but the pain and fear of being rejected is far worse. Wolves who are rejected never recover, chosen mates can be picked but the bond is never the same. To be rejected physically hurts and in some extreme cases, some wolves even pass away from heart break. Although James is only two months older, he's spent the past two months shifting twice a day, his transformation is much swifter and quicker. With the weight of being the Alpha soon hanging on his shoulders, he has pushed himself harder than ever to be as strong as possible. Shifting quickly he allows Hunter to wait patiently for his mate.
River finally encroaches on her mate. Hunter is hesitant. "You are Black Oak..." Despite the Alpha's teachings of unity, the fresh history of the hostility of packs was still off putting to James. To drop his guard could cost his pack everything in the future. River's pure white coat couldn't hide the fact she wasn't Suntra. "I am. But your father accepts me as one of your own"
"If that is the case then you are Suntra" River bows to her mate but he quickly paces over to her, lifting her head with his, the touch between them intoxicating. Both wolves circle one another excitement and lust willing them to lose control. It is River who manages to keep her animalistic side under control out of worry for Clara.
"Tonight has been a long one and I fear, Clara will tire and become ill from such sudden shifts" Hunter is reluctant to see his wolf mate shift again. This moment will last a lifetime for them, the first encounter is always the tale parents tell their pups. He wants to run with her, play with her and all the other things. Consumed with the gift of the bond the moon Goddess provides them.
Panting aggressively, Clara kneels grabbing the dirt under her hands. Her body shakes with the pain. "Do you see now, we aren't related, James. You are my mate. Our wolves are destined to be" He shifts back quicker than she is able to and has already brought her clothes back to her. Clara is in no state to change, the double shift too much for her body to handle. Panic strikes James, he wraps her up in his shirt. The fabric drowning her figure, every bare skinned touch sending tingles down his spine. He never wants to let go, he feels angry at himself. Almost rejecting forced the need to shift and present her wolf. It was unheard of to shift twice the first night of the change. Even he hadn't managed it. Placing her softly in his bed James lays her on her side. Leaving only briefly to bring cold damp compresses to place on her forehead. Sliding in beside her, he holds her tight, listening to every breath. Not daring to sleep himself, until Clara stops shaking uncontrollably.
The morning was painful for the Birthday girl. She groans at the attempts to move her limbs. A strong arm wraps around her stomach, her back pressed tightly against James chest. Clara had never been in such close contact with a male before, her stomach fluttering unusually. Feeling James stir her wolf low growls with delight. The more Clara thinks about the positioning of their bodies, she feels the space between her thighs wetten. Unable to control herself, her face reddens, but the fluttering in her stomach increases. The scent must have woken James up because his grip around Clara's waist tightens, his breath no longer low and shallow. It's hot and heavy in her ear, making her even more moist. "James.." The she wolf speaking his name makes his heart rate increase, Clara was only small in comparison to him. Holding her like this made him feel even more protective of her.
"Tell me you aren't enjoying this and I'll stop" His hold loosens a little, doubt casting his mind that the mate bond isn't as strong for her as it is for him. He prays to the moon Goddess she won't turn him away and leave his room. Last night had been more than difficult for Clara, but thanks to the incredible healing abilities of the wolf. She was back to full strength, she also had River to thank for not keeping her in wolf form for longer than necessary.
"I... We shouldn't" James makes to let go, but Clara grips onto him tight. " I said we shouldn't, I didn't say stop" Hunter paces in anticipation, glad his mate isn't rejecting him. James lays back, tightening his grip around his lover. He grins taking in her scent before his eyes rest on her dark curls. Her appearance is common for a Suntra, but after last night, he knows that's not the case. He can't forget the image of her beautiful wolf. He'd never seen a Black Oak wolf up close before.
James can feel every rigid breath his mate takes, her movement exciting him. He knows it's exciting her too he can smell her arousal. " We need to calm down don't we, birthday girl" James whispers in her ear, not forgetting the Alpha and Luna are home, they could hear a pin drop with their hearing. Clara moans softly, not wishing to stop feeling James' arousal, she yearns for more. Moving carefully, she turns to face him. Her big emerald eyes dazzled James, he'd always thought she had the most beautiful eyes and now, he couldn't bear the thought of them looking at anyone else other than him. He can feel himself getting territorial over her. Without thinking he pulls her closer, daring her to kiss him. She obligates willingly, as soon as their lips touch, the sensation is unreal, James had kissed a few other wolves in his few years, but nothing compared.
Parting lips both gasp heatedly, desperate to explore each other. "We should stop, we'll get in trouble" Clara looks reluctant with her own demands, but he knows too that they can't do this. He spent the last few years avoiding her because he couldn't stand the thought of letting someone from the outside infiltrate their pack, never mind his family. She wasn't the sister he'd been brought up with, she was an orphan. As soon as he recalls those earlier thoughts he feels guilty for thinking them. How could he, after all this had only worked in his favour, hadn't it?
Tucking her head under his chin, he squeezed her before letting go " You're right, we should stop. Before we both do something we regret, mate" There was a teasing glint in his honey eyes and it made Clara want him more, she wanted to taste him. But an uneasy feeling spun in her stomach.
