Blood splattered

Helena's pov A scream broke out in the silence of the night, as the moonlight hid behind the dark clouds. My heartbeat got faster, my chest rising as I ran down the narrow halls of the packed house. Each step felt heavier as I ran, breathing hard. The scent of fear and blood mixed in the air was sharp and suffocating. They were here! As I turned the corner, my bare feet slipped on the polished floor. I grabbed the wall, breathing hard to steady myself. Footsteps echoed behind me, as I lay on the wall. The shadows stretched long and menacing, and I knew they were coming closer. I heard too much! I had seen too much! And now… they would kill me. Ava clutched my arms, trying to drag me up, her fingers digging into my skin. “Helena, we need to move now!” She said in a firm voice, her face pale, showing how worried she was. “Don't stop!” We bolted together, our hearts pounding in unison. I still perceived the smell of the silver and betrayal… it burned in my nose. Just a few hours before, my life had been different. I was happy, I had everything in my control. ***Eleven fifty-five*** I had sat by my window, watching the waves crash against the rocky shore. Save for the chirpings of some lonely birds perching in the trees around the pack, no sound broke the silence of the night. The silver clock ticked beside my bed - 11:55pm. Just five minutes to my birthday. I whispered my prayers to the moon goddess, my voice barely a breath. “Oh, moon goddess, I turn 18 today, please grant me my wolf”, I prayed. When the clock struck midnight, nothing happened. No warmth. No surge of power. No connection. It's 18 hours to my birthday banquet. I can't bear to see myself without a wolf among other wolves. I feel like an outcast. I folded my hands and closed my eyes in prayer, kneeling beside my bed. “Moon goddess, please hear my prayers.” I waited for a moment to see if anything supernatural would happen, but nothing changed. My lips curled in disappointment, my heart racing with many questions. I had hoped, I had prayed, I had believed. But the silence of the goddess answered my prayers with emptiness. I was alone, I felt like an outcast. I'm 18 already, and not getting my Wolf at 18 means exile. I'll be banished from the pack. I lay on my bed in disappointment, wrapping the blanket all over me. My eyes snapped shut, and I was out cold. It seemed like a dream as the familiar tone of 'Happy birthday' echoed around the room. Is it morning already? “Surprise!” Ava grinned, holding a tray of cake and wine, but in her excitement, she tripped. The glass shattered on the floor. I jolted awake at the sound of the glass hitting the ground. I turned, only to see red wine spilled on the ground pooling like blood, with pieces of broken glasses littered around. “Oh my… I've ruined the surprise.” Ava, my personal maiden, lamented, her brows furrowed. “You haven't.” I said, letting out a soft sigh as I got up from the bed, adjusting to the reality that it was morning. “I can still have the cake.” I smiled, collecting the tray she held. Ava’s lips opened, but she closed it again, not knowing what to say. She glanced at me for a moment, a warm smile spreading over her face. “Thank you, my princess.” My eyes darted to the ground, and then to Ava simultaneously. “Okay, this…” I said, pointing at the ground with spilled wine. “It's a mess. You need to clear it up before Dad comes in.” She shook her head, letting out a soft chuckle. “You're right,” she said, as she bent over, carefully selecting the broken glasses. I lay the tray on my bed, sitting beside it. “By the way, have you gotten your Wolf?” Ava's eyes snapped towards me, her head tilting to the side. I felt a lump in my throat at Ava's question, pressing my lips into a thin line. I paused for a moment before speaking, my gaze downcast. “Not yet, Ava.” My face fell, fidgeting with my hands on my lap, my fingers twisting together. “I'm afraid.” Ava took a deep breath, and exhaled softly. “You have nothing to be afraid of.” she paused for a while, smiling at me. “You're the Alpha's only daughter.” I blinked my eyes, trying to control the threat of tears falling, as I traced the edge of the tray lying beside me. Just then, dad's voice broke in, instantly changing the atmosphere. “Helena, my lovely princess.” Dad's voice echoed from outside my room. “Get dressed quickly, I have a surprise for you.” I raised my eyebrows, my lips pursed. “Okay dad.” I screamed, a warm smile spreading over my face. I quickly jumped into the shower and dressed. Dad was outside waiting for his beloved princess. My face fell as I looked at my dad and his servants around him. I couldn't bear it. The best birthday gift I needed was my wolf. Nothing would make me more joyful. “You don't look happy my princess.” Dad said, his head shifting to the side as he looked directly into my eyes with a tender gaze. “What's the matter?” “Dad” I whispered into his ears, making sure nobody heard our conversation. “I still don't have my Wolf. I turn 18 today. That means I will be banished.” Dad laughed out loud, slightly placing his finger above his lips. “Helena.” He said, his voice loud and firm. “Dad,” I interrupted. “Please keep your voice low.” It seemed he didn't care if anyone heard us, but then, he decided to respect my decision and kept his voice low. “No one will dare!” He said, his voice firm. “You're the alpha's daughter, and no one would dare harm you.” I bit my lips, my teeth sinking into its tender flesh, as I gazed at him in doubt. But then, I decided to believe him. Besides, that's the truth - I AM THE ALPHA'S ONLY DAUGHTER. “Thank you dad.” I smiled. “By the way, you said you had something to show me.” I changed the topic immediately. Dad grinned. “Yeah, it's there,” he said, pointing to the left. “Take” he added, handing a car key over to me. “What!” I exclaimed, looking at dad for a moment, before shifting my gaze to the car. “A car, dad.” I quickly got into my new black GLC Mercedes-Benz, trying to test it. “I hope you love it, Helena.” My facial expression expressed my unexplainable joy. “Of course dad! I love it,” I said, placing my hands on the steering wheel. I turned on the ignition, and the car started. Dad smiled. “I'll need to attend to pack duties right now. You should start getting ready for your birthday banquet. We’d have a lot of dignitaries attending.” “Sure Dad.” I sighed, as I got down from the car, closing the door behind me. “Happy birthday, Helena.” Romie's voice whispered from behind me. “You should be at my banquet tonight.” I turned to Romie, my eyebrows raised. Romie chuckled. “You surely want to get my head cut off, Helena. You know it's forbidden for a mere slave like me to attend to such things.” I held his hands, our fingers clenched. “You're not a mere slave, Romie.” I said in a firm voice, my eyes tenderly fixed on his. “You're my boyfriend and I love you.” Romie quickly withdrew his hands from mine, his eyes darting around the compound to see if anyone was watching. “Helena…” Romie said, scratching his head. “It's forbidden for you to love a lowly slave like me, you know that.” “You know what?” I chirped. “I'll formally introduce you to my dad tonight, as my boyfriend.” He shrugged, letting out a soft laugh. “You don't want to ruin your birthday banquet, I'm sure.” He muttered. “Not tonight, Helena… At least not tonight.” “Alright, but be sure you'll attend.” I smiled. “6pm tonight, I can't wait to see you in your suit.” Romie chuckled. “I've got no suit.” My voice dripping with sarcasm, “I think this servant uniform looks good on you,” I laughed. “I'll see you later Romie.” It was almost time for my birthday banquet, everyone who was invited arrived at the palace. My heartbeat got faster. I was nervous, but I couldn't explain why. Maybe it's because I'm 18, regarded as an adult officially. I appeared in my purple dress, made of soft, sleek leather. It clung over my slim figure, bringing out my delicate curves. “You look gorgeous, my princess.” Ava smiled. “Do you think so?” I asked, looking in the mirror, my chest rising. “Romie will be attending the banquet, I'm sure he'll feel that spark again.” Ava laughed. “Romie has always been attracted to you, my princess.” She said, adjusting my necklace. It was a special necklace to me. A beautiful necklace, adorned with the symbol of love, was placed on me by my mom. Dad said mom placed it on me before she died and instructed me to never take it off. He said that was her last wish. I made sure I obeyed my mom's last wish. I never took off the necklace. I always had it on - when sleeping, bathing… It was a treasure. “You know, this necklace seems to grow along with you.” Ava teased. We both laughed, staring at it. “It's beautiful.” She said, “Yeah, it is… It's a treasure.” I smiled, still staring at it. As we talked, we heard a loud shout from outside, it was a familiar voice. It sounded like Dad's voice. “What's going on?” I asked, widening my eyes. The atmosphere seemed tensed. “You need to stay here. Let me check it out.” Ava said. “No, Ava.” I called out. “I'll go with you.” “No, Helena, you don't have your Wolf yet. I can't bear to see you get hurt.” She said, as she quickly left the room. But I stubbornly followed her behind. “Helena…” Ava called. “No, Ava,” I interrupted. “Please let me.” We both heard voices echoing from Dad's room. The first voice sounded like Romie's and the other like Dad's. As we got closer, I was sure beyond reasonable doubt that it was Romie's and Dad's voice. We stood behind the closed door listening to the conversation. “You know what, Alpha,” Romie said. “It's actually a pleasure to watch you die.” Ava looked at me in shock. My heart beat got faster as I tried to pay closer attention, my hands trembling. “Yeah it is.” I heard another voice, it sure was Daphne's voice. “You know,” Romie continued. “My plan was to torture you until you begged for death. But you ruined my plan. But now, I'm left with no choice but to take revenge on Helena.” My breath caught in my throat as I listened closely. I couldn't breathe. My eyes darted to Ava, who was also shocked as I was. “Romie.” I whispered, my throat tightening. My Romie The one I trusted The one I… loved. “No please,” Dad begged. “Don't hurt Helena, she's special.” “Special how?” Romie asked. I heard dad growling so loudly, it seemed he was pierced in his chest with a silver dagger. Dad's voice had been a rasp, each word a plea. “Please, don't hurt Helena.” He said until his voice faded away. Just then, then, the door burst open before Ava and I could escape. There they stood before us - Romie, Daphne and Raph. My dad's most trusted servants. Blood stained their hands and clothes, the scent of clinging to them like smoke.
