I stood frozen for a moment, my hands trembling slightly. I felt my breath catch in my throat.
My heart drummed loudly, it could literally be heard. I didn't know what to do next.
Romie might hurt me if I ran, and at the same time, I couldn't stand his presence.
His dark and suffocating presence loomed over me.
“Let's run!” I whispered to Ava.
We exchanged a slight glance, fear mirroring between us. Without another word, our hands got together and began to run out of the palace.
I choked back a sob, as we got to the corridor.
My stomach twisted at the sight of the dead bodies of some pack warriors scattered around the corridor.
Romie must have done this to be on a safer side in carrying out his mission.
But now….
The moment felt like a lifetime away.
I clenched Ava's hand as we ran, our feet slapping against the marble floor.
My pulse pounded in my ears, drowning out everything except the memories of Romie's voice -
‘I'm left with no option but to take revenge on Helena.’
“Hey, Helena!” Romie's voice thundered from behind. “Wait… You're going to get yourself hurt.”
I didn't care to listen to anything Romie had to say, all I wanted was to make sure me and Ava were safe.
My heartbeat got faster, I could still hear the echoes of their footsteps chasing after us.
Even though I was tired, I couldn't relent.
“There - my car!” I said to Ava, pointing towards the gates as we ran out of the palace doors into the open night.
“Get her!” Romie ordered Raph, his hand pointing at us. “Don't let her escape.”
Suddenly, the sound of a gunshot thundered from behind.
Ava cried out, suddenly falling to the ground, her back bleeding out blood.
My eyes widened as I watched her slipping to the ground. “Ava!” I cried, as I dropped to my knees beside her. “No…”
The sight was terrifying.
Ava flashed a weak gaze at me, her hand grabbing mine. “Run, Helena.” She said, her voice cracked.
I cupped my face, trembling. “No, Ava, I can't leave you here alone.” I muttered, my grip on her became firm.
“Go, Helena,” Ava's expression softened. “My Wolf will protect me,” she assured me, nodding weakly.
Tears streamed down my cheeks as my eyes darted around. We were surrounded by warriors.
Their shadows blocked out the moonlight, there was no chance to escape.
Raph barreled past them, his gaze filled with concern. He tenderly carried Ava into his arms.
“Ava…” his voice was gentle. “You'll be fine.”
He quickly took her to doctor Lucas where she'd be treated.
My heart melted as I watched how Raph carried her away - his love, his mate.
And then there was Romie.
“You think you can escape from me?” Romie said, as he stepped closer to me, his eyes fixed on mine.
My eyes were filled with tears as I looked at Romie. “Why, Romie?” The tears streaked down. “I don't deserve this from you.”
Romie's eyes darted to the side, his lips pursed. But almost immediately, his gaze snapped at me again, filled with wrath.
“Take her,” he ordered one of the warriors, licking his lips. “Lock her up in the dungeon.”
Rough hands seized me. I trashed it, but it was useless.
As the warriors dragged me through the cold stone floor, my body scraping against the stones, memories of the past ran through my mind - memories of a different Romie, a different life.
I closed my eyes and found myself back in a different place, as the pain of the present faded away into the past.
*****
It was Romie's birthday, and I had spent days preparing for it. All I wanted to do was surprise him and gladen his heart with something special.
I stood in front of him, holding a neatly wrapped box. Romie looked at me in curiosity.
“What's that?” He asked.
“Check it out yourself.” I grinned.
His fingers quickly unwrapped the ribbon.
“Happy birthday my love.” I said as he opened the box.
Romie raised an eyebrow, amused as he saw a sleek black suit inside the box.
Romie looked at me, his charming eyes made me blush for a moment.
A warm smile spread over my face. I looked away, anticipating a hug or even a kiss.
Romie's expression softened. “You shouldn't have.” He said, his voice gentle.
My eyes snapped at him in a tender gaze. “I wanted to, Romie.” My cheeks flushed. “You deserve something that makes you feel important and powerful.”
His smile sent chills down my spine. “You're more than enough for me," he replied. “But this…” his hand ran through the fabric, smiling warmly. “It's a treasure.”
“I love you.” I said, my eyes were fixed on his lips anticipating a kiss.
Romie could feel the moment, he knew what I wanted.
He set the box aside and stepped closer. His warmth wrapped around me as his hand slid into my waist, pulling me closer to him.
My pulse quickened.
I couldn't resist his touch. I remained numb, my eyes locked in his as his hands caressed my soft cheeks.
My breath seized as Romie's lips began to move closer to mine, until finally our lips met in a kiss.
Soft at first, then deeper - It was our first kiss.
Romie's grip on my waist grew stronger, his hands roving around my curves.
I felt a spark within me. I had never had such feelings before.
My body leaned into Romie's.
“I love you, Romie.” I murmured again, breathless.
“I love you too, Helena,” he said with a gentle voice.
*****
It felt like a lifetime ago, it was a time when our love was bright.
My memories shattered as the warriors threw me to the ground, my head colliding with the Stony wall.
“Ouch… that hurts” I muttered.
“And who cares?” One of the warriors said. “You're no longer the Alpha's daughter. You're now a slave.”
“A lowly slave,” the other said.
They both laughed mockingly at me. I came to the reality that I would no longer be recognized as a princess but a slave.
Just then, Daphne stepped into the dungeon, her eyes filled with wrath.
“Oh my…” She purred mockingly. “Behold the mighty princess - look at you now.”
“Why are you here Dahne?” I spat.
Daphne smirked. “I think you should address me more respectfully, Helena. I'm no longer beneath you. Besides, I'll soon be made Luna.”
I laughed out loud, bitter but unrestrained.
“In your dreams.”
“How dare you!” Daphne's voice echoed as her hands landed on my cheeks in an aggressive slap, which caused a slight bruise beside my lips.
“You’ll beg for your death when I'm made Luna.” she spat.
Just as she was still speaking, Romie stepped in, looking elegant in his blue suit.
His eyes narrowed, noticing the slight bruise on my face.
“What happened to you, Helena?” He asked, his hand slightly caressing my cheek. “Who did this to you?”
“Why do you care? I fell.” I whispered.
“No you didn't.”
He turned to Daphne, his gaze filled with wrath. “How dare you, Daphne?”
Daphne’s eyebrows raised. “She just told you she fell…”
“Shut up!” His order left no room for argument. He pointed his fingers towards her as a warning. “Touch her again, and I'll end you myself.”
“Yes alpha.” She bowed, as she shamefully left the dungeon, her head buried in the ground.
He turned to the maiden that had come along with him. “Prepare her,” he ordered.
My heartbeat got faster with different thoughts running through my mind.
“Wh - what…” I stammered, catching my breath. “What do you mean? What are you planning to do, Romie?”
Romie chuckled softly, as he stepped closer to me, his eyes fixed on mine. “You'll find out tonight, Helena.” He whispered. “You're mine! Do not question me.”
“I’m just a slave…”
“My personal slave,” Romie corrected, interrupting me. “And you'll do exactly as I please, you have no right to protest.”
He turned to the maiden standing beside him. “Get to work!” He ordered.
A wicked promise lingered in his eyes.
And I… had no choice.
