Grief’s Darkness

1428 Words
Ares' feet barely carried him as he collapsed into the sanctuary of their room, a place that had once been filled with laughter and warmth, now an empty shell, echoing with the absence of Sylas. The door slammed shut behind him, not loud enough to drown out the noise of his grief but loud enough to lock out the world. His knees gave way, and he fell onto the bed, burying his face into the familiar fabric of their sheets. The scent of lemon and chocolate musk Sylas' scent filled his lungs, wrapping around him like a ghost, a bittersweet reminder of everything he had lost. "I can't feel him anymore," Leo whimpered within him, the wolf's anguish just as deep as Ares'. "I can't... Sylas is really gone!" Ares' heart shattered all over again, the sobs ripping through him like knives. His body shook violently, his fingers digging into the pillow where Sylas' scent still lingered, fading with each passing day. He buried his face deeper into the pillow, as if doing so could somehow bring Sylas back, as if inhaling that scent could turn back time and undo the nightmare that had stolen his mate from him. The world outside the room ceased to exist. He heard nothing but the pounding of his own heart, felt nothing but the emptiness that stretched endlessly around him. Days blurred into one another, meaningless and shapeless. Time lost all significance in the haze of grief that consumed him. Food left outside the door went untouched, and when the pack members came to check on him, he refused to answer. Their knocks, their whispered concerns—it all faded into a distant hum that never reached him. He couldn't face them. He couldn't face a world without Sylas. Outside the room, the pack watched and waited, concern etched into every face. Elara, Sylas' mother, stood in the hallway with Thane, her hands shaking as she wiped away the tears that kept falling. The loss of her son was a weight she could hardly bear, but watching Ares unravel was breaking her heart all over again. "He needs help, Thane," Elara said, her voice trembling with emotion. "We can't just leave him in there. He'll waste away." Thane stood rigid beside her, his face stony. His grief for Sylas ran deep, but so did his resentment toward the one who had survived. "Let him grieve," he said, his tone devoid of sympathy. "He's not a child. He knew the risks when he mated with Sylas." Elara's eyes flashed with anger. "He's family now. Sylas chose him, and we need to respect that! We can't just abandon him like this." Her voice broke, and she pressed a hand to her chest as if trying to hold herself together. "Sylas would never forgive us if we did." Thane's expression darkened, his fists clenching at his sides. "Our son is dead, Elara. And that... that weakling in there is the reason why." His voice was cold, harsh, each word like a blade. Elara recoiled as if struck, her eyes wide with shock. "You don't mean that," she whispered, shaking her head. "Sylas loved him—" "He loved him," Thane interrupted, his voice rising with anger. "And because of that love, Sylas is gone." His hands were shaking now, his voice a mix of grief and fury. "If Ares had been stronger, if he had stayed behind when he was told, Sylas wouldn't have had to throw his life away protecting him." Elara stared at her mate, her heart breaking all over again. She shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "Sylas died protecting the one he loved, and you dishonor that love by blaming Ares." Nicola, Sylas' beta and second-in-command, appeared at the end of the hall, her eyes cold as ice as she approached. "Elara's right, Thane," she said, though her voice held none of the warmth Elara's did. "But that doesn't mean Ares belongs here anymore. He's not one of us. He never was." Elara turned on Nicola, fury in her eyes. "Don't you dare—" But Nicola's gaze remained fixed on the closed door behind which Ares lay broken. "We all know he's weak. He couldn't even shift properly. Sylas was always protecting him, and it finally cost him his life. If we let him stay here, all he'll do is remind us of what we've lost." Thane's jaw clenched, and Elara's hands balled into fists, but Nicola pressed on, her voice hard and unyielding. "It's better if he leaves. Send him to the Moonblade Pack or some other territory. Let them deal with him. He doesn't belong here anymore." Elara stepped forward, her eyes flashing with rage. "Sylas loved him," she hissed. "That makes him family." Nicola's eyes flickered with disdain. "Family? He's not pack, Elara. He's never been pack." Thane, who had remained silent throughout the exchange, finally spoke. "Enough." His voice was low, dangerous. "We'll send him to the Moonblade Pack. Let them take him in. He doesn't belong here." Elara stared at her mate in disbelief, her heart breaking under the weight of his words. "Thane—" "That's final," he said, his voice hard. He turned on his heel and walked away, leaving Elara standing in the hallway, her body trembling with rage and sorrow. Inside the room, Ares remained oblivious to the decision being made about his future. His world was confined to the memories of Sylas, the scent that was slowly fading from the sheets, the echo of his mate's laughter that haunted his every waking moment. He lay curled up on the bed, his body weak from days without food, his mind fractured by the relentless grief. Leo, his wolf, whimpered inside him. "I can't take this anymore, Ares. I can't feel him. He's gone... our mate is gone." Ares pressed his face deeper into the pillow, his tears wetting the fabric. "I'll never leave you, Sylas," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I'll stay here with you forever." Far across the country, the Moonblade Pack thrived within the lush valley that served as their sanctuary. Their territory, a blend of forested hills and fertile plains, was renowned for its beauty and the strength of its warriors. The pack was known for its inclusivity, welcoming not only werewolves but other supernaturals—witches, wizards, and even the occasional vampire. Orson, the pack's alpha, sat in his office, his sharp eyes scanning the reports laid out before him. His brow furrowed as he read over the latest patrol updates, his mind never fully at ease. The events that had transpired with the Moonstone Clan were still fresh in his memory, a grim reminder of how quickly things could spiral out of control. Jamal, his best friend and the pack's wizard, appeared in the doorway with his usual flair, materializing from thin air with a dramatic flourish. "What's got you so tense, Alpha?" he teased, leaning against the doorframe with a smirk. Orson barely glanced up, his expression serious. "I want the borders checked again. I don't trust the reports." Jamal rolled his eyes. "Orson, we've got witches, wizards, and wolves patrolling the borders. We're practically impenetrable." He paused, his smirk fading slightly as he caught Orson's expression. "But I'll check again, if it'll help you sleep at night." Orson set the report down and stood, rubbing a hand over his face. "I don't want what happened to the Moonstone Clan happening here. Their alpha's mate was killed in an attack. The whole pack's still reeling from it." Jamal's expression softened, a rare moment of seriousness crossing his usually lighthearted demeanor. "Yeah, I heard about that. Poor guy... losing a mate like that..." He trailed off, shaking his head. "I can't even imagine." Orson's jaw clenched, the weight of his own worries settling heavily on his shoulders. He had yet to find his own mate, despite the years of searching. At 24, the pressure from his pack and his parents had only increased, but the moon goddess remained silent. Sometimes, he wondered if he would ever find the one meant for him. Jamal, sensing the shift in his friend's mood, grinned and snapped his fingers. "Come on, Alpha. Let's go check those borders. You can brood all you want while I handle the magic." Orson chuckled, though the weight in his chest didn't lift. Together, they headed out into the forest, unaware that miles away, a heartbroken wolf was about to enter their lives, and nothing would ever be the same again.
