Chapter four - The secret in the shadows

960 Words
Ava returned to her office after a short break, expecting a quiet moment to catch up on emails. But as she approached her desk, her eyes caught something unusual on her monitor. A message had appeared out of nowhere: “The past never forgets. Neither does the system.” Her heart skipped. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, unsure whether to delete it or ignore it. The words were vague, yet chilling. For a moment, Ava froze, unsure if this was a prank, a technical glitch, or something more deliberate. “Call Noah,” she said aloud, more to herself than anyone else. Noah arrived in under a minute, moving with the same calm, confident ease that had unnerved her since the first day. He leaned over the desk, scanning the message, his eyes briefly locking with hers. “Someone’s testing you… or testing me,” he said lightly, almost teasing. Ava’s chest tightened. “Did… did you see what it said? What does it mean?” Noah didn’t answer directly. Instead, he typed a few rapid commands, screens flickering with code and security logs. Within moments, the alert vanished, replaced by normal system activity. “Done,” he said, straightening up. Then, in a voice so calm it was almost casual, he added, “But secrets have a way of surfacing. Make sure you’re ready for them.” Ava blinked. Her pulse raced. “Wait… what do you mean by that?” she asked, her voice a mix of fear and curiosity. Noah’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smirk. “You’ll see. Just… don’t underestimate the consequences of the past.” The words were simple, yet they made her mind spiral. Did he know something? Was he threatening her, or just warning her? Something in his tone suggested he was far closer to her world than she realized. She called him back, her voice firmer this time. “Close the door. Sit. Now. I want answers.” Noah obeyed, moving with effortless grace, but the smirk never left his face. “What do you know?” Ava demanded, her eyes sharp. Noah leaned back, fingers steepled. “I know enough to help you… and enough to remind you that the past isn’t gone. It lingers. Actions, mistakes… they have a way of finding their way back.” Ava’s mind raced. Was he implying he knew her secrets? Or was this another part of the test, a challenge to see how she would react under pressure? Her chest tightened, and she realized something unsettling: she was admiring him. His calm confidence, his effortless skill, and even his audacity to speak in cryptic warnings made her pulse quicken. Why was a young man like this — talented, intelligent, and unafraid — here? Why wasn’t he working somewhere grand, instead of quietly manipulating the flow of her company’s digital empire? Noah noticed her shift in expression and tilted his head slightly, a subtle acknowledgment that he had noticed her fascination. “Relax,” he said softly, almost teasing. “I’m not here to ruin you… unless you ask me to.” Ava’s eyes narrowed. “And what exactly does that mean?” Noah smirked again, as if amused by the web he had spun. “Consider it a… friendly reminder that the past and present are never separate. What’s done… is never truly gone.” Ava leaned back in her chair, mind whirling. His words were a threat. They were a warning. And yet, they were also… strangely comforting. She didn’t fully trust him, yet she wanted him around, needed him near — even if she didn’t understand why. Noah left the office shortly after, closing the door with a soft click. Ava sat in silence, staring at the empty doorway, realizing that her world had subtly shifted. She was no longer in complete control — and yet, she wanted him in her orbit, closer, despite the danger. Outside, the hum of the city continued. Inside, the battle of secrets, trust, and power had only just begun. Later that afternoon, Eva sat back in her office, massaging her temples. The memory of the cryptic warning Noah had left earlier still lingered in her mind, an uneasy reminder that her past might not be as buried as she had hoped. The soft click of the door caught her attention. A tall, well-dressed gentleman entered casually. He looked organized, polished, almost like he belonged in another, more prestigious office. Eva didn’t immediately recognize him, but something in his demeanor was familiar. “Dan,” she said after a beat, realizing it was him. He had been a close friend for years, someone who knew pieces of her past that she didn’t share with anyone else. Dan gave a small smile. “Thought I’d check in. Coffee?” Eva waved him off. “Not now. I… I just needed someone to hear me out.” She leaned back in her chair, eyes narrowing with worry. “These threats… they’re back. From the company. From the past. I don’t know how it’s possible, but someone is targeting us again. And now… they’ve started getting personal. Cyber-attacks, messages… I don’t know who I can trust.” Dan stepped closer, his voice calm and measured. “Eva… breathe. We’ll find a solution. You don’t have to handle this alone.” Unseen by them, outside the slightly ajar door, Noah stood silently. His posture relaxed, hands casually in his pockets, but his eyes glimmered with amusement. He had positioned himself near a small corner where he could overhear everything. As he listened to Eva confess her fears, and Dan offer reassurances, a faint smirk crossed his lips. Perfect, he thought to himself. Everything is going according to plan.
