Aria's POV
I woke to sunlight streaming through unfamiliar windows and the sound of raised voices downstairs.
"Have you lost your mind?" The deep baritone could only belong to Alpha Blackwood. "The entire pack is in chaos!"
"Good." Marcus's reply was calm, almost amused. "They needed shaking up."
Reality crashed back. I was naked in Marcus Blackwood's bed, covered in his scent, while his father raged downstairs about the scandal we'd caused.
I sat up, pulling the sheet around me, and noticed the marks. My neck, my shoulders, my thighs—evidence of last night painted across my skin like a map of everywhere Marcus had claimed.
"She's nobody!" Alpha Blackwood roared. "A rejected Omega who couldn't even keep a Beta interested!"
"Say another word about her," Marcus's voice dropped to deadly quiet, "and we're going to have a problem."
"We already have a problem! Derek Stone is demanding satisfaction. Says you took what was his."
"She was never his." The possessiveness in Marcus's voice made my wolf purr. "And if he wants satisfaction, he can challenge me for it."
"He might just do that."
"Let him try."
Footsteps on the stairs made my heart race. I looked around frantically for my dress, remembering it was probably still on the balcony floor.
The door opened, and Marcus entered carrying a tray of food and coffee. He was already dressed in dark jeans and a black t-shirt that showed every line of muscle.
"You're awake." He set the tray on the nightstand, his eyes scanning the visible marks on my skin with satisfaction.
"Your father sounds upset."
"My father's always upset." He sat on the bed's edge, his hand finding my bare shoulder. "How do you feel?"
How did I feel? Sore in places I'd never been sore. Powerful in ways I'd never been powerful. Confused. Terrified. Exhilarated.
"Like I've started something I can't stop."
"Good instincts." He leaned in, kissing a particularly dark mark on my neck. "Because you have."
"Marcus, last night was—"
"The beginning." He pulled back to look at me. "Not the end. Not a one-time thing. The beginning."
"You can't just decide that."
"I'm not deciding alone." His thumb traced my bottom lip. "Your scent has changed. Your wolf has bonded to mine. You feel it too."
I did feel it. My wolf was practically purring, reaching for his in a way she'd never reached for Derek's.
"This is insane. We don't even know each other."
"We know enough." He stood, moving to his closet. "Get dressed. We need to deal with the fallout."
"We?"
He pulled out one of his shirts and a pair of sweatpants, tossing them to me. "You think I'm sending you back to face them alone?"
"I can handle my own battles."
"I know you can." He turned, his expression serious. "But you don't have to anymore."
Before I could respond, his phone rang. Gabriel's name flashed on the screen.
"What?" Marcus answered.
"You need to get down here. Now." Gabriel's voice was tense even through the speaker. "Derek's here with half the pack. He's formally challenging you for rights to Aria."
My blood went cold. "He can't do that. We were never mated."
"Doesn't matter," Marcus said, his eyes never leaving mine. "He's claiming prior courtship. Says I violated pack law by taking you before your engagement was formally dissolved."
"That's archaic—"
"But technically valid." He moved back to me, cupping my face. "Don't look so worried. I've been waiting for an excuse to put Derek Stone in his place."
"You could get hurt."
His smile was all predator. "Concerned about me, little wolf?"
"This is my fault—"
"No." His voice turned hard. "This is Derek's fault for not knowing what he had. Your sister's fault for being a backstabbing b***h. The pack's fault for underestimating you."
"If you fight him, everyone will think I'm just causing trouble. That I'm the Omega who came between two stronger wolves."
"Let them think what they want." He kissed me hard and quick. "After today, they'll know exactly who you belong to."
"I don't belong to anyone."
"No," he agreed, surprising me. "But you're with me now. That's what they'll learn."
Another crash from downstairs, followed by Alpha Blackwood's roar.
"Get dressed," Marcus ordered. "Stay here until I come for you."
"Marcus—"
But he was already gone, taking the stairs three at a time.
I dressed quickly in his clothes, swimming in fabric that smelled like pine and winter. My wolf was agitated, pacing, wanting to follow our—
No. Not our mate. We weren't mated. One night didn't make us—
Another crash. Raised voices. Multiple wolves now.
I crept to the top of the stairs, peering down into the main room.
The scene was chaos. Derek stood in the center, flanked by his Beta friends. Gabriel was trying to maintain order while Alpha Blackwood looked ready to kill everyone. And Marcus...
Marcus stood completely calm, like violence was nothing more than weather to him.
"You have no claim," Marcus said simply.
"She wore my ring!" Derek snarled. "We announced our engagement to the entire pack!"
"An engagement you broke when you f****d her sister."
"That's not—we had a disagreement. Couples fight. It doesn't give you the right to—"
"To what?" Marcus stepped closer. "To take her home? To show her what real desire feels like? To make her scream my name so loud the entire mountain heard it?"
My face burned, but my wolf preened at the claim.
Derek's face went purple. "She's mine!"
"Prove it."
"Fine. Tomorrow. Dawn. The challenge circle."
"Derek, no!" A new voice—Selena, pushing through the crowd. "This is stupid. She's not worth—"
"Shut up," Derek snarled at my sister. "This is your fault too."
"My fault? You're the one who couldn't keep it in your pants!"
"Enough!" Alpha Blackwood's command silenced everyone. "This is pack business now. A formal challenge has been issued." He looked at Marcus. "Do you accept?"
"With pleasure."
"This is ridiculous," I said, unable to stay hidden any longer.
Every head turned as I descended the stairs, wearing Marcus's clothes, covered in his scent, marked by his mouth.
The room went dead silent.
"Aria." Derek's voice broke on my name. "What have you done?"
"What have I done?" I laughed, the sound bitter. "I found you with my sister at our engagement party."
"That was a mistake. We can work through it—"
"No." The word came out stronger than I felt. "We can't."
"Because you spread your legs for him?" Derek gestured at Marcus. "One night and you think you're his? He goes through women like water. You're nothing special to him."
The words hit their mark, doubt creeping in. Marcus had a reputation. Everyone knew it.
"Actually," Marcus said, moving to stand beside me, "she's everything."
The simple declaration stunned everyone, including me.
"You don't mean that," Derek said. "This is just some game to you. Take the rejected Omega to bed, piss off your father, prove you can have anyone—"
Marcus moved so fast I barely saw it. One second Derek was talking, the next he was pinned against the wall with Marcus's hand around his throat.
"Say another word about her," Marcus growled, his wolf rising to the surface, "and I'll kill you here and now. Challenge or no challenge."
"Marcus." Alpha Blackwood's warning was clear. "Pack law—"
"f**k pack law." But Marcus released Derek, who gasped for air. "Tomorrow at dawn, I'm going to destroy you. And when you're bleeding in the dirt, maybe you'll understand what you threw away."
Derek straightened, his pride wounded more than his throat. "We'll see about that."
He stormed out, his friends following. Selena lingered, her eyes finding mine.
"You're making a mistake," she said. "Marcus Blackwood doesn't mate. He doesn't commit. When he's done with you—"
"Like Derek was done with me?" I shot back. "At least Marcus is honest about what he wants."
"And what does he want?"
I felt Marcus's hand find mine, our fingers interlacing.
"Me," I said simply. "He wants me."
Selena's laugh was cruel. "For now. But what happens when he gets bored? When a stronger, prettier wolf catches his eye? You'll have burned every bridge for nothing."
"Then that's my mistake to make."
"You're going to regret this."
"The only thing I regret," I said, my wolf rising, "is not seeing you for what you were sooner."
She left with a huff, the door slamming behind her.
The room slowly emptied until only Marcus, Gabriel, Alpha Blackwood and I remained.
"This is a disaster," Alpha Blackwood said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "The pack is already talking. The Omega who caused two strong wolves to fight—"
"I didn't cause anything," I interrupted, surprising everyone including myself. "Derek made his choice when he cheated. Marcus made his when he brought me here. The only choice I made was to stop being everyone's doormat."
Alpha Blackwood studied me with new interest. "You speak boldly for an Omega."
"Maybe because I'm tired of being treated like one."
"Careful, girl. You're in my house—"
"She's under my protection," Marcus cut in. "In my house or not, she speaks freely."
Father and son stared at each other, Alpha power crackling between them.
"You're making a mistake," Alpha Blackwood said finally. "This girl, this situation—it weakens your position."
"My position was never in question."
"It will be if you lose tomorrow."
"I won't lose."
"Derek's strong. And he's motivated."
"He's an i***t who threw away a treasure." Marcus pulled me closer. "And tomorrow, I'm going to make him regret it."
Alpha Blackwood's gaze shifted to me. "And you? You're comfortable with two wolves fighting over you like you're property?"
"No," I said honestly. "But I don't have a choice, do I? Pack law says Derek has the right to challenge. Just like pack law says I have no say in the outcome."
"You could leave," Gabriel suggested quietly. "Go to another pack—"
"No." Marcus's voice was absolute. "She's not running."
"That's not your decision," I said.
He turned to me, his eyes intense. "You want to run?"
Did I? Part of me wanted to flee, to avoid the drama and judgment. But a bigger part, the part that had awakened last night, wanted to stay and fight.
"No," I admitted. "I'm done running from who I am."
"And who are you?" Alpha Blackwood asked.
I thought about it. Yesterday I would have said I was nobody. A weak Omega trying to find her place. But now?
"I'm someone who's been underestimated my whole life," I said. "And I'm done pretending to be less than I am."
Marcus's smile was proud. "That's my girl."
"I'm not—"
He kissed me, cutting off my protest. It was a claiming kiss, meant for his father and brother to see.
When we broke apart, Alpha Blackwood was shaking his head.
"Tomorrow's challenge will determine everything," he said. "If Marcus wins, Derek backs off permanently. If Derek wins..."
"He gets to court me?" I asked, disgusted by the archaic practice.
"He gets the right to try," Alpha Blackwood corrected. "You can't be forced to accept him. But Marcus would have to step aside."
"That won't happen," Marcus said confidently.
"We'll see." His father turned to leave, then paused. "She stays here tonight. If she's seen in public before the challenge, it'll cause a riot."
After he left, Gabriel approached me.
"You sure about this?" he asked quietly. "My brother... he's not easy."
"Neither am I," I replied.
Gabriel's smile was knowing. "No, I'm starting to see that."
He left us alone, and suddenly the weight of everything crashed down. In twenty-four hours, I'd gone from engaged to Derek to... whatever this was with Marcus.
"You're thinking too loud," Marcus said, pulling me toward the kitchen.
"A lot has happened."
"And more will happen tomorrow." He lifted me onto the counter, stepping between my legs. "But right now, you need food."
"I'm not hungry."
"Liar." He opened the fridge, pulling out various items. "When's the last time you ate?"
I thought about it. The engagement party. I'd been too nervous to eat.
"Exactly." He started cooking, moving with surprising efficiency. "You're going to eat, then we're going to train."
"Train?"
"Your wolf has been suppressed for years. She needs to run, to fight, to remember what she is."
"I can't fight."
"Not yet." He cracked eggs into a pan. "But you will."
"Marcus, I'm not a fighter. I'm a healer—"
"You're both." He turned to face me. "That's what makes you dangerous. Omegas aren't weak, Aria. They're the balance to Alpha strength. We destroy, you create. We attack, you defend. We're hard, you're soft."
"That sounds pretty weak to me."
"Soft doesn't mean weak." He moved closer, his hands on my thighs. "Water is soft, but it carves through stone. You're like water—adaptable, necessary, and far more powerful than anyone realizes."
"You barely know me."
"I know enough." His thumbs traced circles on my legs. "I know your wolf calls to mine. I know your scent drives me insane. I know the thought of Derek touching you makes me want to tear his throat out."
"That's possessiveness, not knowledge."
"It's instinct." He leaned in, his breath hot against my neck. "My wolf recognized yours the moment you walked down those stairs last night. That's why I was waiting."
"You were waiting for me?"
"I'm always waiting for you." The admission seemed to surprise him. "For two years, I've watched you accept less than you deserve. Last night, you finally woke up."
"And if I hadn't? If I'd married Derek?"
His jaw clenched. "Then I would have spent my life knowing my mate chose someone else."
The word hung between us. Mate.
"We're not—"
"Not yet," he agreed. "But we will be."
"You can't know that."
"I can." He pulled back to look at me. "Because I've never wanted anyone the way I want you. Never needed anyone's scent, their touch, their presence. The women before—they were distractions. Attempts to forget what I couldn't have."
"And now?"
"Now you're here." His hand cupped my face. "And I'm never letting you go."
The intensity should have scared me. Instead, it made me feel cherished. Chosen. Wanted.
"What if you lose tomorrow?"
"I won't."
"But if you do—"
"Then I'll challenge him again. And again. And again." His eyes flashed gold. "Until he understands that you're mine."
"I'm not property—"
"No," he agreed, kissing me softly. "You're my equal. My match. My mate."
"Marcus—"
The window shattered.
A rock landed on the kitchen floor, a note attached.
Marcus growled, moving to shield me as he grabbed the note.
His face darkened as he read it.
"What does it say?"
He handed it to me, his jaw clenched with fury.
"OMEGA w***e. YOU'LL PAY FOR DESTROYING OUR PACK HIERARCHY."
My hands shook. Not from fear, but from rage.
"Who would—"
Another rock. Another window. This time the note was shorter:
"LEAVE OR DIE."
Marcus's wolf rose to the surface, his eyes going full gold.
"Stay here," he commanded, heading for the door.
"Marcus, no—"
But he was already gone, shifting mid-run as he burst outside.
I heard snarls, yelps, the sound of fighting.
Then silence.
Too much silence.
I grabbed a knife from the kitchen, my wolf pushing forward, ready to defend it.
The door opened.
It wasn't Marcus.
It was Derek, blood on his face, fury in his eyes.
"Hello, Aria," he said, stepping inside. "We need to talk."
