The First Queen

1052 Words
Three months had passed since the battle. The kingdom was healing. Wolves who had once been enemies now lived side by side. Children played in the streets of the rebuilt Silvermoon City. Laughter replaced the sound of war cries. But I couldn't shake the feeling that something was coming. I stood on the palace balcony, staring at the stars. The night was quiet, too quiet. The moon hung low and full, casting silver light across the land. "You're brooding again," Silas said, appearing behind me. "I'm not brooding. I'm thinking." "Same thing." He wrapped his arms around me. "What's on your mind?" "I don't know." I leaned into him. "I just have this feeling. Like something's about to happen." "Something good?" "Something big." He kissed my temple. "Whatever it is, we'll face it together." I smiled. "I know." But even as I said it, the unease remained. --- The next morning, I was holding court when the messenger arrived. He burst through the doors, gasping for breath. "Your Majesty! There's something you need to see. At the border." I rose from my throne. "What is it?" "A wolf. She appeared at the eastern gate. She's... ancient. Powerful. She says she's the original Silvermoon Queen." The room went silent. "That's impossible," my mother said, stepping forward. "The original queen died three thousand years ago." "She's not dead," the messenger said. "She's very much alive. And she's demanding to see the current queen." --- I rode to the border with Silas and my mother. The eastern gate was surrounded by wolves, all of them staring at the figure beyond the bars. I pushed through the crowd and stopped. She was beautiful. Silver-white hair flowing to the ground. Golden eyes that burned with ancient power. A crown of moonlight on her head. She looked like me. Like my mother. Like every Silvermoon queen who had ever lived. But she was so much more. "Raven Blackwood," she said, her voice like wind through the trees. "I've been waiting for you." "Who are you?" I asked. "I am Seraphina." She smiled. "The first Seraphina. The original Silvermoon Queen." "That's impossible," I said. "You died three thousand years ago." "Did I?" She stepped closer. "Or did I simply... wait?" I felt a chill run down my spine. "Wait for what?" "For you." She tilted her head. "For the one who would break the prophecy. For the one who would rewrite the rules. For the one who would finally be worthy of my crown." --- We brought her to the palace. She sat in the throne room like she owned it—which, technically, she did. Wolves gathered to stare at this ancient legend. "Three thousand years ago," she began, "I built this kingdom. I united the packs. I created the prophecy that has haunted your bloodline for millennia." "You created the prophecy?" I asked. "I did. I saw that one day, a wolf would rise who could either destroy or unite. I wrote it down to guide the packs. To prepare them." "Prepare them for what?" "For the truth." She looked at me. "The truth about Silvermoon. The truth about the prophecy. The truth about what I really am." I leaned forward. "And what's that?" She stood, walking toward me slowly. "I am not a wolf, Raven. I am something older. Something... more." "What do you mean?" "I mean that your bloodline is not pure wolf. It never was. Thousands of years ago, I was a goddess. A moon goddess. I fell in love with a wolf and gave up my immortality to be with him." The room gasped. "Your bloodline is divine," she continued. "That's why you're so powerful. That's why the prophecy exists. That's why you survived the rejection poison. That's why you can command wolves. It's not just royalty, Raven. It's magic." I stared at her. "I'm a goddess?" "Partially. Your blood is diluted, mixed with wolf after wolf. But the power is still there. Sleeping. Waiting." "Waiting for what?" "For you to awaken it." She reached out, touching my forehead. "For you to become what you were always meant to be." My mother stepped forward. "Wait. If she becomes a goddess, what happens to her humanity?" Seraphina smiled. "She doesn't lose it. She just becomes... more." --- That night, I couldn't sleep. I walked through the palace, my mind racing. A goddess. My bloodline was divine. No wonder I'd always felt different. No wonder I'd always felt like I was meant for more. Silas found me in the library. "Raven." He sat beside me. "Talk to me." "I don't know what to say." I looked at him. "Everything I thought I knew about myself is a lie." "It's not a lie. It's just... more." "That's what she said." I laughed bitterly. "More. Always more." "Raven—" "I just want to be normal," I said. "I just want to be me. Not a queen. Not a goddess. Just Raven." He pulled me into his arms. "You are Raven. You'll always be Raven. No matter what you become." I held onto him. "What if I become something I don't recognize?" "Then I'll love you anyway." He kissed my forehead. "I'll always love you anyway." I looked into his eyes. "You really mean that?" "I've never meant anything more." I kissed him. Deep and desperate and full of all the fears I couldn't say. He held me close. And for a moment, the chaos faded. --- The next morning, I met with Seraphina again. "I've decided," I said. "I'm going to awaken." She smiled. "I knew you would." "But I have conditions." "Name them." "I won't lose myself. I won't become a monster. And I won't abandon my people." "Accepted." She nodded. "But there is one more condition. To fully awaken, you must face the Shadow. The dark part of yourself that you've been hiding from." "The Shadow?" "Every goddess has one. It's the part of you that fears, that doubts, that hurts. To become whole, you must confront it." "How do I do that?" "You'll know when you're ready." She stood. "Take your time, Raven. The Shadow isn't going anywhere." She walked out. I sat alone in the throne room, my heart pounding. The Shadow. I had a feeling I knew exactly what that was.
