Six months passed.
Six months of rebuilding. Six months of peace. Six months of learning to be a queen.
I stood on the balcony of the newly restored Silvermoon Palace, watching the sun rise over the forest. The kingdom was healing. The wolves were thriving.
And I was happy.
Silas appeared behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist. "You're up early."
"Couldn't sleep."
"Nightmares again?"
"No." I leaned into him. "Just thinking."
"About what?"
"About how lucky I am." I turned to face him. "A year ago, I was an Omega nobody. Now I'm a queen. I have my mother. I have you. I have Lila. I have everything I ever wanted."
He kissed my forehead. "You deserve it."
"I don't know about that."
"I do." He smiled. "Now come back to bed."
I laughed. "The court will be arriving soon. I have responsibilities."
"The court can wait."
"The court—"
"Raven." His voice was soft. "Come back to bed."
I was about to say yes.
And then the alarms went off.
---
We ran to the throne room.
Wolves were gathered in the courtyard, their eyes fixed on the gates. A figure was approaching—alone, walking slowly, his hands raised.
"I come in peace," he called. "I only wish to speak with the queen."
I stepped forward. "Who are you?"
The man looked up.
He was young—maybe my age. Dark hair, silver eyes, a wolf's grace. He was handsome in a sharp, dangerous way.
And he was wearing a crown.
"My name is Kael," he said. "And I am the true heir to Silvermoon."
---
The room erupted.
Shouts. Accusations. Wolves reaching for weapons.
I held up my hand. "Silence."
The room went quiet.
"Explain yourself," I said to the stranger.
Kael smiled—cold and confident. "Your mother told you she was the last Silvermoon queen. She lied. The bloodline didn't end with her. It continued through a different branch. My branch."
"That's impossible," my mother said, stepping forward. "I was the only child of the last king."
"You were the only child of the last king. But your father had a sister. A sister who was banished for loving a rogue wolf." Kael's eyes gleamed. "That sister was my grandmother. I am the true heir of Silvermoon, not you. Not your daughter."
My mother went pale. "That's not true."
"It is true." He pulled out an ancient scroll, unfurling it. "This is the Silvermoon genealogy. It proves everything."
I looked at the scroll. At the names. At the lineage.
And I saw it. A branch I'd never known existed.
"Mom," I said quietly. "Is this true?"
My mother was silent.
"Mom. ANSWER ME."
"Raven." Her voice cracked. "I didn't know. My father never told me about his sister. I swear to you. I didn't know."
Kael laughed. "The queen doesn't know. How fitting."
"Even if it's true," I said, turning to him. "It doesn't matter. I've led these wolves. I've fought for them. I've bled for them."
"You led them because you believed you were the heir," Kael said. "But you're not. You're just a girl who stumbled into power."
"And you?" I stepped closer. "What have you done for these wolves? Where were you when the Alliance attacked? Where were you when I was fighting for my life?"
Kael's smile faltered.
"I was waiting," he said. "For the right moment."
"The right moment?" I laughed bitterly. "You waited for me to do all the hard work. You waited for me to defeat the Alliance. And now that it's safe, you want to take everything from me."
"I want what belongs to me."
"Nothing belongs to you. The wolves chose me. They follow me. They love me." I looked at the crowd. "If you want the throne, you'll have to take it from me."
Kael stared at me.
Then he smiled again.
"Very well," he said. "I challenge you. Trial by combat. Winner takes the throne."
---
Silas stepped forward. "Absolutely not."
"Silas—"
"He's been planning this. He's trained for it. You're still recovering from the last battle."
"I can fight."
"You're not fighting him. I'll fight him."
"No." I grabbed his arm. "This is my fight. If I don't do this, the wolves will never respect me."
"Raven—"
"Trust me."
He looked at me. His eyes were full of fear and love.
"Please," I whispered. "Trust me."
He nodded slowly.
I turned to face Kael.
"I accept your challenge."
---
The courtyard was cleared.
Wolves gathered in a circle, watching. My mother stood at the front, her face pale. Silas was beside her, his jaw tight. Lila was clutching her sword, her knuckles white.
Kael faced me, his silver eyes gleaming.
"Ready to lose, false queen?"
"Ready to show you what a real queen can do."
We shifted.
Kael's wolf was massive—black fur, silver eyes, fangs like daggers. He lunged at me, snarling.
I met him head-on.
We crashed together, teeth and claws. He was fast. Strong. Trained. He'd been waiting for this moment his entire life.
But I had been fighting for mine.
I dodged his lunge and slammed into his side. He stumbled, and I was on him, my fangs at his throat.
"Yield," I growled.
He twisted, throwing me off. I hit the ground hard, but I was up in an instant.
"You're good," he admitted. "But not good enough."
He lunged again.
This time, I let him come. I dropped low, and he flew over me. I spun and sank my fangs into his back leg.
He howled in pain.
I didn't let go.
"Yield," I said again. "Or I'll rip your leg off."
He struggled. Snarled. But he couldn't escape.
"YIELD."
"Fine!" he screamed. "I yield! I yield!"
I let go.
He shifted back, clutching his leg, his face twisted with pain and defeat.
"You win," he spat. "For now."
"Leave," I said. "And never come back."
He staggered to his feet. "You'll regret this."
"I don't think I will."
He limped away, disappearing into the forest.
The courtyard erupted in cheers.
Silas ran to me, pulling me into his arms. "You were incredible."
"I was terrified," I admitted.
"You didn't look it."
"That's the secret." I smiled. "Never let them see you sweat."
He laughed and kissed me.
And for the first time in a long time, I felt like I could breathe.
---
My mother approached, her eyes filled with tears.
"I'm so proud of you," she said. "You were magnificent."
"Mom—"
"I should have told you the truth. I should have—"
"It doesn't matter." I hugged her. "You're my mother. That's all that matters."
She held me tightly. "I love you, Raven."
"I love you too, Mom."
---
That night, we celebrated.
The wolves feasted and danced and howled at the moon. Silas held me close, whispering sweet nothings in my ear.
"You're really a queen now," he said.
"I've always been a queen." I grinned. "I just didn't know it."
"Arrogant."
"Confident."
He kissed me. "Beautiful."
I kissed him back.
And in that moment, surrounded by my pack, my family, my love—I knew I was exactly where I belonged.
