The morning of the final battle dawned grey and cold.
I stood at the head of my army, thousands of wolves behind me, their eyes burning with determination. My mother was on my right, Silas on my left. Lila was in the front ranks, her sword gleaming.
The Alliance army was gathered on the plain below us. Thousands of them. Feral wolves with red eyes and bloodthirsty snarls. At their head stood Kael, his silver crown gleaming, his wolf form massive and black.
And beside him stood Celine.
I should have known she'd survive. She always did.
"Ready?" Silas asked.
"Ready," I said.
I raised my sword.
And we charged.
---
The two armies crashed together like waves.
Wolves collided, teeth and claws and screams. Blood stained the snow. Bodies fell on both sides.
I fought like a demon.
Silver fur blazing, golden eyes burning, I tore through the Alliance ranks. Every wolf who came at me fell. Every enemy who stood in my path died.
But there were so many of them.
I saw my mother fighting nearby, her silver-white wolf magnificent and terrible. She was taking down Alliance wolves two at a time.
I saw Silas fighting back-to-back with Lila, their movements perfectly coordinated. They were holding their own.
But we were losing.
The Alliance had more numbers. More wolves. More hunger.
"Raven!" Kael's voice cut through the chaos. "Face me!"
I turned.
Kael was charging toward me, his black wolf huge and terrifying.
I shifted and met him head-on.
---
We clashed in the center of the battlefield.
Silver against black. Light against dark. Queen against usurper.
"Give up," he snarled, his fangs snapping at my throat. "You can't win."
"I can," I growled back. "And I will."
I lunged, sinking my teeth into his shoulder. He howled in pain and threw me off. I landed hard but scrambled to my feet.
"You're strong," he admitted. "But not strong enough."
"Then make me stronger."
I lunged again.
We rolled across the battlefield, teeth and claws tearing into each other. I felt his fangs slice my side. I tasted his blood in my mouth.
"Raven!" Silas's voice. "Behind you!"
I spun just as an Alliance wolf lunged at me. I took it down with one swipe of my paw.
Kael used the distraction to slam into me. I hit the ground hard, his weight pinning me down.
"This is it," he whispered. "The end of the Silvermoon line."
"Not today."
I summoned all my power.
Golden light erupted from my body. Kael screamed and was thrown off me. I rose to my feet, my wolf form blazing with silver fire.
"Yield," I commanded.
"Never!"
He lunged again.
This time, I was ready.
I dodged, spun, and sank my fangs into his throat. He struggled. Snarled. But I held on.
"Yield," I said again. "Or I'll rip your throat out."
He went still.
"I yield," he whispered.
I let go.
He shifted back, his hand clutching his bleeding neck. I shifted too, standing over him.
"You lost," I said. "Again."
"Kill me," he spat. "Get it over with."
"No." I shook my head. "You're going to live. You're going to watch me rule. You're going to see everything I build, everything I accomplish, everything you could have had if you weren't such a fool."
He stared at me, his eyes full of hate.
"You'll regret this," he said.
"I doubt it."
I had him taken away.
---
The battle was over.
The Alliance wolves fled once they saw their leader defeated. My wolves howled in victory.
But I didn't feel victorious.
I looked at the battlefield. Bodies everywhere. Wolves who would never go home. Families who would never see their loved ones again.
"Mom," I said quietly. "Was this worth it?"
My mother appeared beside me. "It was necessary."
"Necessary doesn't make it easy."
"No." She put her hand on my shoulder. "It doesn't."
I stood there, surrounded by the dead and dying.
And I made a vow.
I would never let this happen again.
---
Weeks passed.
We buried our dead. We mourned. We rebuilt.
Kael was imprisoned in the palace dungeons. Celine was found and captured, her schemes finally exposed. The Alliance was broken, their remaining members scattered to the wind.
And I ruled.
I ruled with wisdom and compassion. I united the packs, just as the prophecy had foretold. But I did it on my terms. I did it with love.
"You did it," Silas said one night.
We were standing on the palace balcony, staring at the stars.
"We did it," I corrected. "All of us."
"Still stubborn."
"Still yours."
He laughed and pulled me close.
"Raven Blackwood," he said. "Queen of Silvermoon. Uniter of the packs. Destroyer of prophecy."
"I didn't destroy the prophecy."
"You rewrote it." He kissed my forehead. "That's even better."
I smiled. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"I know." He grinned. "I'm amazing."
I shoved him. "Incredibly humble, too."
"I learned from the best."
We stood there, wrapped in each other, and watched the moon rise over our kingdom.
"Silas?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you. For everything. For waiting for me. For protecting me. For loving me."
He turned me to face him.
"Thank you for letting me," he said.
And then he kissed me.
