The Divine Trial

Weeks passed since my awakening. The power inside me grew stronger every day. I could feel the moon's pull in my blood. I could hear the whispers of ancient wolves in the wind. I could command the elements themselves. But with power came fear. The packs were divided. Some worshipped me as a goddess. Others feared me as a monster. A few wanted to kill me before I could become a threat. "Your Majesty." Gideon approached me in the throne room. "There are rumblings. A group of wolves from the Northern territories. They're calling you a false goddess. They say your power is unnatural." I sighed. "When will they learn?" "When you show them the truth." He looked at me. "Perhaps it's time for a demonstration." "A demonstration?" "Show them what you can do. Not in battle. In mercy. In healing. In wisdom." He smiled. "Prove to them that you are not a destroyer. You are a protector." I considered his words. "You may be right." "I usually am." I laughed. "Fine. Arrange a gathering. I'll speak to the packs myself." --- The gathering was held in the Great Meadow. Thousands of wolves assembled from every pack. They watched me with a mixture of awe and suspicion. I stood on a raised platform, my mother and Silas beside me. "Wolves of the realm," I began. "I know you fear me. I know you doubt me. I know some of you think I am a monster." Murmurs rippled through the crowd. "I am not here to destroy you. I am not here to rule you with fear. I am here to protect you. To heal you. To guide you." I raised my hands. "I am a goddess. But I am also a wolf. I am one of you. I have bled for you. I have fought for you. I will continue to fight for you." I looked at the crowd. "Let me show you what I can do." --- I called upon the power within me. Golden light erupted from my body. It spread across the meadow, touching every wolf in the crowd. I felt their pain. Their fear. Their doubt. And I healed it. Wolves who had been wounded in the war found their wounds closing. Wolves who had lost hope found it returning. Wolves who had feared me found themselves smiling. The crowd gasped. "Your Majesty—" someone started. I smiled. "I am not your enemy. I am your protector. And I will always protect you." Cheers erupted. I looked at Silas. He was beaming. "Told you," I said quietly. "Told me what?" "That you'd always be proud of me." "Always." He kissed my forehead. "Always." --- The demonstration worked. Word spread across the realm. The goddess was not a monster. The goddess was a healer. The goddess was their protector. But not everyone was convinced. A messenger arrived a week later. He was young, his face pale, his hands trembling. "Your Majesty. There's trouble at the eastern border." I leaned forward. "What kind of trouble?" "A rogue pack." He swallowed hard. "They're led by a wolf who calls himself the Shadow King. He says he's the true heir to the original Silvermoon throne. He says you are an imposter." "Another one?" "He's different, Your Majesty. He has an army. Thousands of wolves. And he has magic." I rose from my throne. "Magic?" "They say he's been touched by the same divine power as you. They say he's been waiting for you to awaken so he can challenge you." I looked at my mother. She was pale. "That's impossible," she said. "The divine power only flows through our bloodline." "There are other bloodlines," Seraphina said, appearing in the doorway. "Ancient bloodlines. Forgotten bloodlines. The Shadow King is from one of them." I turned to her. "Explain." "Thousands of years ago, when I fell in love with a wolf, I wasn't the only goddess to do so. There were others. Others who fell in love with mortal wolves. Others who created bloodlines. Others who left behind heirs." "You mean—" "I mean there are other divine bloodlines in the world." She looked at me. "And the Shadow King is one of them." --- I met with my council that night. Silas, my mother, Lila, Gideon, and Seraphina gathered in the war room. Maps were spread across the table. "Tell me about this Shadow King," I said. "He's ruthless," Gideon said. "He's been building his army for years. He's conquered dozens of smaller packs in the north. And now he's heading for us." "What does he want?" "Your throne. Your power. Your goddess blood." Seraphina's voice was hard. "He wants to absorb you. To take your power for himself." I felt my wolf stir inside me. "He won't." "He's been preparing for this moment for a long time." Seraphina leaned forward. "He knows you haven't fully mastered your power yet. He's going to strike while you're still vulnerable." "Then I'll have to master it quickly." "It's not that simple. The Shadow King is old. Ancient. He's been waiting for this battle longer than you've been alive." "Then I'll find a way." I stood. "I didn't face the Shadow, defeat the Alliance, or become a goddess to let some ancient wolf take everything from me." My mother smiled. "That's my daughter." Lila grinned. "That's my queen." Silas took my hand. "That's my mate." I looked at them. My family. My pack. My everything. "Tomorrow," I said. "We march."
