I kept my eyes closed even as I heard the footsteps come closer to my bed. My heart was beating wildly in my chest, but I forced myself to remain calm and rely on my other senses to try and figure out who was here and what they're motives were. I had been in situations like this enough times to realise that acting on instinct wouldn't help.  Another footstep echoed through the silent room and I realised that whoever it was had to be female. The footsteps were too soft for a male and I felt slightly relieved. If the intruder meant to harm me, I would have a better chance at survival if it were a female.  Unless she's armed...
