The heavy weight of her secret had become too much to bear. Serena knew that the time had finally come to let the truth out, no matter the consequences. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs as she walked down the quiet, empty corridor toward Professor Harrison's private office after the final bell.
Taking a deep, stabilizing breath, she knocked gently and stepped inside. He was packing his leather briefcase, looking as distant and imposing as ever.
"Professor Harrison?" her voice shook slightly, breaking the silence of the room. "I... I need to tell you something important."
Harrison stopped his movements, looking up with his piercing dark eyes. He adjusted his suit jacket, his expression unreadable. "Yes, Serena? What is it?"
Serena clenched her fists at her sides, forcing herself to look straight into his eyes. "I don't know when it happened, or how it even started... but I have fallen in love with you. I am just confessing my feelings because my heart couldn't hold it anymore. I am not asking for anything in return, Sir. I don't expect you to feel the same."
The room fell into a suffocating, dead silence. Harrison froze, staring at her for a long, agonizing moment. The cold mask he always wore seemed to c***k just a tiny bit.
"Why, Serena?" his deep voice echoed, surprisingly low and quiet. "What is the reason behind this foolish love?"
Serena gave a soft, bittersweet smile, her eyes shining with absolute honesty. "Love doesn't need a reason, Sir. It just happens."
Harrison didn't say a word. He simply closed his briefcase, gave her a long, lingering look that held a storm of hidden emotions, and walked past her out of the room.
In the days that followed, the atmosphere between them became thick with tension. Every single day, their paths would cross in the college hallways. Their eyes would lock in intense, unspoken eye contact, but Harrison refused to give her any response. Whenever Serena tried to approach him after lectures or find an excuse to talk to him, he would subtly but deliberately ignore her, retreating behind his iron-clad walls.
But Serena refused to give up. The fire in her heart was too strong to be put out by his silence. Late one evening, she opened her phone and typed a direct message to him: “Please meet me tomorrow after classes. I will be waiting by the old campus courtyard.”
The next afternoon, the autumn wind rustled the leaves in the secluded courtyard. Serena stood there, her nerves stretched to their absolute limit, until she heard familiar, heavy footsteps. She turned around. Harrison was standing there, his hands pushed deep into his coat pockets.
As they stepped closer to each other, the distance between them vanished until they were standing mere inches apart. Their eyes locked instantly. Looking up at him, Serena felt a wave of pure emotion crash over her. Her eyes sparkled with an undeniable, deep affection.
"I love you, Sir," she whispered softly, the words hanging beautifully in the quiet air.
She looked at him with such intense, raw devotion that Harrison, for the first time in his life, looked visibly flustered and nervous. He shifted his gaze slightly, clearing his throat. "Why are you looking at me like that, Serena?"
"Because my heart wants to," she replied, her voice filled with a playful yet deep sincerity.
A sudden, unexpected wave of shyness washed over both of them. The strict professor and the confident student were suddenly just two people caught in a web of undeniable chemistry. Summoning all her bravery, Serena reached out and gently slid her fingers into his hand. Her small hand fit perfectly against his large, warm palm. Harrison didn't pull away. For a few breathtaking moments, they stood completely frozen in time, holding hands, staring into each other's souls.
Then, acting on a sudden, wild impulse of love, Serena leaned up on her tiptoes. She gently pressed her lips against his smooth, cold cheek, leaving a soft kiss behind.
The moment her lips left his skin, Harrison instantly reverted back to his rigid, serious posture. His face became an unreadable mask of stone once again. He slowly pulled his hand back, checking his watch with trembling fingers.
"I am leaving now. I need to go back home," he said, his voice clipped and strained, as if he was fighting a massive internal war.
Serena’s heart sank slightly, but she stepped in front of him, her eyes pleading. "Please, don't just leave like this after meeting me. Let me hug you just once... and then you can go."
Harrison looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a deep, heartbreaking conflict. He wanted to reach out, but the heavy chains of his past and his position held him back.
"No," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper. "We cannot do a hug."
Without another word, Harrison turned on his heel and walked away into the fading evening light, leaving Serena standing alone in the courtyard, her cheek still tingling with the ghost of his presence.
