The Truth Beneath the Rejection

1086 Words
Lyra stared at him. She had imagined this moment a thousand times. She had imagined confronting him. She had imagined screaming at him. She had imagined asking him why he had looked into her eyes and rejected the bond that had nearly destroyed her. But she had never imagined this. Never imagined that the rejection had been a lie. Never imagined that the man she had spent so long hating had been carrying the same pain. Her fingers curled against her palms. “You expect me to believe that?” The Alpha King didn’t move. “I don’t expect you to.” “Then why tell me now?” “Because they know.” Lyra’s heart skipped. “Who?” His gaze shifted toward the darkness beyond the trees. “The ones who forced me to reject you.” The old Moon Seer stepped between them. “You waited too long.” The Alpha King looked at her. “I had no choice.” “You should have told her years ago.” “I couldn’t.” “You could have tried.” His expression hardened. “If I had, the Council would have killed her.” Lyra looked between them. “Who are you talking about?” Neither answered. Her frustration snapped. “Stop speaking around me!” Her voice cracked through the forest like lightning. The blue mark on her shoulder flared. The Alpha King’s eyes dropped to it instantly. “Lyra…” “No.” She stepped toward him. “I spent years believing something was wrong with me.” Her voice shook, but she didn’t stop. “I thought I wasn’t enough. Not strong enough. Not worthy enough.” His expression shifted—something raw breaking through his control. “You were never the problem.” “Then why did you look me in the eyes and reject me?” His jaw tightened. “Because I was forced to.” “Everyone has a choice.” “Not when the Council uses the person you love as leverage.” Silence fell. Lyra froze. The Moon Seer turned her face away. Lyra’s breath hitched. “The Council?” The Alpha King nodded once. “They rule this kingdom from the shadows. The throne is only mine in name.” Lyra’s voice dropped. “And they control you.” “They control the crown through the Moonfire.” The Moon Seer spoke quietly. “The Moonfire is the ancient power that binds the throne. Whoever controls it controls the kingdom.” Lyra’s gaze dropped to her glowing mark. “And they think they control it.” The Alpha King looked at her. “Until you.” Lyra swallowed. “So they didn’t reject me because I was weak…” Silence. “They rejected me because I was a threat.” “Yes.” “And now that it’s awakened…” “They will come for you.” “How soon?” He didn’t answer. The Moon Seer did. “They are already coming.” A horn split the night. Once. The sound rolled through the valley like a blade dragged across bone. Twice. Closer. Sharper. Wrong. Then a third time. So close the ground seemed to shiver in response. The Alpha King went still. “That isn’t a royal signal.” The Seer’s face turned pale. “No.” A fourth horn answered. This one didn’t echo. It tore through the air. The forest itself seemed to recoil. The Alpha King’s hand went to his sword. “They found us.” Lyra’s voice was barely audible. “Who?” His eyes locked on hers. “The Shadow Wolves.” The name didn’t arrive like information. It arrived like instinct. Like fear remembered before it was learned. The forest went silent. Then— A howl. Not one. Not distant. Everywhere. Layered. Overlapping. Closing in. Lyra turned slowly. Golden eyes ignited between the trees. One. Then ten. Then too many to count. The darkness itself was watching. Branches bent without wind. Something massive moved just beyond sight. The Moon Seer whispered, “They’ve come for the Moonfire.” The Alpha King stepped in front of Lyra. “Stay behind me.” Lyra shook her head. “No.” “Lyra—” “I’ve spent my life being protected by lies.” She stepped beside him. “I’m done hiding.” Something dangerous flickered in his eyes—approval, fear, or both. Then the forest broke. A massive wolf stepped forward. The ground cracked beneath its paws. Not from weight. From pressure. It didn’t run. It arrived. The air around it distorted. Then its body began to unravel. Bone snapped inward. Fur dissolved like ash in wind. The shape collapsed— And reformed. A man stood where the beast had been. Lord Kael. Black coat. Motionless. Wrong in the stillness. A scar cut through his face like a permanent verdict. His eyes were not human. They never had been. He smiled. “Your Majesty.” The Alpha King raised his sword instantly. “Kael.” Lyra’s voice was low. “You know him?” Kael’s gaze slid to her. “So this is the Moonfire bearer.” The Alpha King stepped forward. “Don’t look at her.” Kael chuckled softly. “You still protect her.” “I’ll kill anyone who touches her.” The smile faded. “You said that before.” Lyra went still. Kael’s eyes sharpened. “The night you rejected her.” Silence snapped tight. Lyra’s breath caught. “You were there?” “I was the one who delivered the Council’s order.” The words landed like a strike to the chest. The Alpha King’s grip tightened until his knuckles whitened. “You should have stayed away.” “And you should have obeyed.” The air shifted. The wolves in the trees lowered their heads in unison. Kael’s gaze dropped to Lyra’s mark. “But you didn’t.” A pulse of blue light answered him. The forest reacted. Kael’s smile returned—slow, satisfied. “The Moonfire has awakened.” The Alpha King lifted his sword. “Tell the Council something for me.” Kael tilted his head. “What?” “They can have the crown.” His voice dropped into something lethal. “But they will never touch her.” The wolves erupted. A single commandless surge. The forest exploded into motion. The Alpha King moved first. Steel tore through moonlight. And the night broke into war.
