When I opened my eyes, I was lying in Adrian’s arms.
He was staring at me like he had seen death itself.
“What happened?” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian?”
He carefully placed me on the bed.
“The prophecy has awakened.”
I sat up.
“I heard the voice.”
He nodded.
“It’s been silent for hundreds of years.”
“What prophecy?”
He looked toward the window.
Then he spoke.
“Three centuries ago, the Moon Queen received a vision.”
I listened.
“She saw a kingdom covered in blood. She saw a king kneeling before an army. And beside him stood a woman wearing a silver crown.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“What happens to the king?”
Adrian’s eyes met mine.
“He dies.”
Silence filled the room.
“And you believe I’m going to kill you?”
“No.”
His answer came immediately.
“Then what?”
“I believe someone wants you to.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Adrian walked closer.
“The prophecy was never completed. The final part was destroyed.”
“By your father?”
He nodded.
“Why?”
“Because the final words said something that terrified him.”
“What words?”
Adrian looked at me.
“They said the Moon Queen would return through her bloodline…”
He paused.
“…and the Alpha King would have to choose between his crown and his mate.”
My heart stopped.
“You rejected me.”
His expression tightened.
“I know.”
“Because you chose your crown?”
He looked away.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You broke my heart.”
“I know.”
“You humiliated me.”
“I know.”
“You made me believe I wasn’t enough.”
He closed his eyes.
“And I have hated myself every day since.”
My anger faltered.
Before I could speak, someone screamed outside.
Adrian immediately reached for his sword.
The palace alarm began ringing.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Guards ran through the corridors.
Then the doors burst open.
A woman entered.
She wore a long red dress and a silver crown.
Adrian’s face changed.
“Selene.”
The woman smiled.
“Hello, Adrian.”
I looked between them.
“Who is she?”
Selene’s eyes moved toward me.
Her smile disappeared.
“So this is the rejected mate.”
Adrian stepped between us.
“Don’t come near her.”
Selene laughed softly.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
“Understand what?”
She looked at me.
“You were never supposed to be his mate.”
My heart sank.
Selene’s smile returned.
“You were supposed to be mine.”
