The King’s Confession

1424 Words
The rain had stopped, but the forest was still covered in darkness. Liana stood beside the window, staring at the moon. Her fingers trembled as she remembered what had happened earlier. The mark on her neck was burning again. Not painfully. This time, it felt different. Warm. Alive. She touched it gently. “Why is this happening to me?” A sudden knock came from the door. Liana froze. Before she could answer, the door opened. Alpha Adrian walked in. His black shirt was slightly wet from the rain, and his dark hair fell messily across his forehead. He looked tired. But his eyes were fixed completely on her. “Liana.” She immediately turned away. “What do you want?” He closed the door behind him. “I need to talk to you.” “There is nothing left to say.” “There is.” His voice was unusually soft. Liana laughed bitterly. “You rejected me, Adrian.” His expression tightened. “I know.” “You humiliated me in front of the entire pack.” “I know.” “You told me I was not worthy of being your mate.” He looked down. “And I was wrong.” Liana’s heart skipped. She turned to face him. “What did you say?” Adrian stepped closer. “I was wrong.” The room became silent. For months, Liana had imagined hearing those words. But now that they had finally come, they didn’t make her happy. They only hurt more. “You don’t get to say that now,” she whispered. “I know.” “You can’t reject me and then decide you want me back whenever you feel like it.” “I know.” “Then why are you here?” Adrian looked directly into her eyes. “Because I never stopped loving you.” Liana’s breath caught. For a moment, she couldn’t speak. Then she shook her head. “No.” “Liana—” “No!” She stepped backward. “You don’t love me.” “I do.” “If you loved me, you wouldn’t have rejected me.” His jaw tightened. “I thought I was protecting you.” “From what?” Adrian remained silent. Liana’s eyes narrowed. “Tell me.” He finally whispered, “From the prophecy.” Her heart stopped. “What prophecy?” Adrian walked toward her. “There is an ancient prophecy about the Alpha King and his mate.” Liana stared at him. “What does it say?” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “That when the rejected mate returns to the kingdom, the entire wolf world will change.” Liana swallowed. “And?” “And if I accept you…” He paused. “…I could lose everything.” A strange silence filled the room. Liana looked at him with tears in her eyes. “So you rejected me to save your kingdom?” Adrian nodded slowly. “But I made the worst mistake of my life.” Before Liana could answer, a loud howl echoed through the forest. It wasn’t distant. It was close. Too close. Adrian immediately turned toward the window. His expression changed. “What is it?” Liana asked. He didn’t answer. Another howl followed—this one so sharp it felt like it sliced through the air itself. Then another. And another. Not one voice. Many. Too many. The sound rolled through the forest like a wave of teeth and rage. Adrian’s eyes flashed gold. “They’re here.” A heavy impact slammed into the outer wall of the castle. The entire room shook. Dust fell from the ceiling. Liana stumbled back. “What was that?!” A second impact hit—louder. Closer. Stone cracked somewhere deep in the structure. “Who?” she demanded. Adrian grabbed her hand. “The rogues.” A third impact exploded against the gates. Metal screamed. Wood splintered. The castle alarm suddenly erupted—piercing, frantic, unbearable. A blaring horn echoed through every corridor. Outside, chaos ignited instantly. Screams. Running footsteps. Orders shouted and cut off mid-sentence. Then— A roar. Not human. Not wolf alone. Something twisted between both. Liana’s heart slammed against her ribs. The walls shook again as something massive struck the outer defenses. “Breach on the west wall!” a guard screamed somewhere far below. Another voice followed—panicked, breaking. “They’re climbing—THEY’RE ON THE WALLS!” A crash of glass exploded from a nearby corridor. Then another. And another. The castle was no longer holding. It was breaking. Adrian pulled Liana behind him as a distant explosion rocked the structure. Firelight flickered through the windows. Smoke began to curl into the room. “Stay here,” he ordered sharply. “No.” “Liana, this isn’t a request.” Another violent impact hit—so close the floor beneath them jolted. She staggered but didn’t fall. “I won’t hide while everyone else is fighting.” Adrian looked at her for a long moment. Then— The mark on Liana’s neck began to glow. A sudden blue light burst through the room. Bright. Blinding. Alive. Adrian’s eyes widened. “Impossible…” The castle outside roared with collapsing stone and screaming wind. Liana looked down at herself. “What… is happening to me?” He whispered, “Your wolf…” “What about it?” Adrian stepped backward. “She’s awakening.” Outside, the castle walls shook violently. Another impact—this time so powerful it sounded like the mountain itself had been struck. And then— A voice echoed through the night. Not shouted. Not carried. But everywhere. “Bring me the rejected mate!” Liana froze. The air itself felt heavier. Wrong. Adrian’s expression turned lethal. He stepped in front of her. “No one is taking her.” A low laugh rolled through the broken wind outside. “You still don’t understand, Alpha King.” A pause. Then— “She isn’t yours to protect.” The blue glow around Liana intensified. It pulsed violently, syncing with the collapsing rhythm of the castle around them. Liana gasped. Her knees weakened. “Adrian… something’s happening…” He turned. And stopped. The chaos outside faded for a single heartbeat. Because Liana was no longer just standing there. The light around her thickened—no longer a glow, but a living aura, swirling like a storm trapped inside her skin. Her hair lifted as if caught in an unseen wind. Her breath slowed. Then deepened. As if something inside her had finally learned how to breathe through her. Her eyes lifted. Silver. Not reflecting light. Producing it. The mark on her neck no longer burned. It pulsed—like a second heart beating beneath her skin. Louder. Stronger. Commanding. Inside her mind, the whisper returned. Wake up, Luna. This time, Liana didn’t flinch. Her head tilted slightly. As if she was listening to something far older than fear. A sound built inside her chest. Not a scream. Not pain. A pressure. A presence forcing its way through every broken wall of her identity. Her fingers curled. The air around her cracked with invisible force. Adrian’s voice broke through the chaos. “Liana—don’t fight it!” But the castle chose that moment to collapse again. A massive section of wall outside gave way with a deafening roar. Wind and smoke exploded inward. The ground split with a violent tremor. And Liana— Finally stopped resisting. Her body arched backward. The blue light detonated outward in a silent shockwave. Windows shattered instantly. Stone fractured like glass. The entire castle groaned as if it were bowing to something far greater than destruction. And in that moment— The rogues outside went still. Every single one. Not moving. Not breathing. As if the world itself had just placed a hand over their mouths. As if they had finally felt her. Liana lowered her head slowly. When she spoke, her voice was no longer fragile. It was layered. Human… and something far deeper beneath it. “Adrian…” He froze. The Alpha King—who had never stepped back from war, blood, or death— took a single step away from her. Because the girl he had rejected was gone. And in her place stood something that no longer belonged to the world of wolves alone. Behind Liana’s silver eyes, the awakening had fully opened. And it was looking directly at the darkness approaching the castle.
