Lyra opened her eyes slowly.
For several seconds, she couldn’t remember where she was.
The cold earth pressed against her palms. The ancient tree towered above her, its branches twisting across the night sky like black veins against the moon.
Then the memory returned.
Kael.
The ceremony.
The rejection.
Her chest tightened.
She tried to stand, but her body felt strangely different.
Lighter.
Stronger.
Almost unfamiliar.
Lyra looked down at her wrist.
The silver mark was still there.
But it had changed.
Thin lines of light now extended from the mark across her skin, forming an intricate pattern that seemed to move with every beat of her heart.
“What is happening to me?”
She touched the mark.
A wave of warmth rushed through her body.
Lyra gasped.
Suddenly, the forest became painfully clear.
She could hear leaves moving hundreds of feet away.
She could smell the damp earth beneath the trees.
She could hear the heartbeat of a small animal hiding somewhere in the darkness.
Even the distant river sounded close enough to touch.
Her breathing quickened.
“This isn’t possible.”
She had always been an ordinary wolf.
At least, that was what she had been told.
Then the visions began.
A woman stood beneath a blood-red moon.
She wore a silver crown.
Behind her stood thousands of wolves, their heads bowed.
Then the scene changed.
A kingdom burned.
An army marched beneath black banners.
And the same silver crown appeared in the hands of someone Lyra couldn’t see.
Lyra cried out and dropped to her knees.
The vision disappeared.
She clutched her head.
“What was that?”
A voice came from behind her.
“You saw the past.”
Lyra spun around.
An elderly woman stood between the trees.
Her long silver hair flowed over her shoulders, and her eyes seemed almost unnaturally bright beneath the moonlight.
“Who are you?”
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at the glowing mark on Lyra’s wrist.
Then she whispered:
“So it has finally begun.”
Lyra took a cautious step backward.
“Begun?”
The woman nodded.
“Your awakening.”
Lyra’s heart raced.
“What awakening?”
The woman approached slowly.
“You are not who you believe yourself to be.”
Before Lyra could respond, the woman touched two fingers to the silver mark.
A pulse of energy passed between them.
Lyra saw another vision.
A baby wrapped in silver cloth.
A woman crying.
Men carrying weapons.
And a voice saying:
“Hide her. If the Alphas discover who she is, they will kill her.”
Lyra jerked away.
“That was me.”
The woman nodded.
“Yes.”
Lyra stared at her in disbelief.
“Who am I?”
The old woman looked toward the moon.
“You are the last descendant of the Moon’s ancient bloodline.”
Lyra’s heart pounded.
“The Moon’s heir.”
The words felt impossible.
She had spent her entire life believing she was insignificant.
Now someone was telling her that her blood could change the entire werewolf world.
Far away, inside the Black Moon Palace, Kael suddenly doubled over.
A sharp pain tore through his chest.
He grabbed the edge of the table.
“Alpha!”
His guards rushed toward him.
Kael lifted one hand, stopping them.
His breathing was uneven.
Something was pulling at him.
A familiar presence.
Lyra.
He closed his eyes.
For the first time since the rejection, he could feel her.
Not clearly.
Not completely.
But enough.
“She’s alive,” he whispered.
His captain stared at him.
“My king?”
Kael opened his eyes.
“Prepare the horses.”
“Where are we going?”
Kael looked toward the northern forest.
“To find my rejected mate.”
But deep in the forest, Lyra was about to discover that she wasn’t the only one who had awakened.
From somewhere beyond the trees came a low, terrifying howl.
The old woman’s face changed.
“They’ve found you.”
Lyra looked into the darkness.
Two red eyes appeared between the trees.
Then another pair.
And another.
The old woman stepped in front of her.
“Stay behind me.”
Lyra’s silver mark began to glow.
For the first time, she didn’t feel afraid.
Something inside her whispered:
Run.
But another voice answered.
Fight.
