The Moon’s Secret.

The red eyes between the trees did not move. They simply watched. Lyra stood frozen, her silver mark pulsing beneath her skin. The old woman stepped in front of her. “Do not move.” Lyra swallowed. “Who are they?” “The Shadow Pack.” The words came quietly, but fear flickered across the old woman’s face. Lyra had never seen an elder afraid before. A low growl rolled through the forest. Then three enormous wolves emerged from the darkness. Their fur was blacker than the night itself, and their eyes glowed crimson beneath the moonlight. The largest wolf shifted first. Bones cracked. Fur disappeared. Within seconds, a tall man stood before them, dressed in black leather. His eyes remained fixed on Lyra. “So,” he said. “The lost heir has finally awakened.” Lyra’s heart pounded. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” The man smiled. “You will.” He took a step forward. “Your blood has been hidden for eighteen years. Your enemies believed the Moon’s bloodline had ended.” The old woman raised her hand. “Leave her.” The man’s smile disappeared. “You know I cannot do that.” He glanced at Lyra’s wrist. “The Moon Goddess has awakened her. Every Alpha in the world will soon feel it.” Lyra stared at the glowing mark. “What do you want from me?” “Your power.” The answer was immediate. “Your blood can break the ancient Alpha bonds. It can free thousands of wolves—or place every kingdom beneath the control of whoever possesses you.” The old woman moved closer to Lyra. “Do not listen to him.” The man laughed. “She deserves the truth.” He looked directly at Lyra. “Your parents weren’t ordinary wolves. Your father was the last Guardian of the Moon Temple. Your mother carried the royal bloodline.” Lyra’s breath caught. “My parents are dead.” “That is what you were told.” The world seemed to tilt beneath her feet. Before she could ask another question, the man lunged. The old woman threw her hand forward. Silver light exploded between them. The warrior was thrown backward, but he recovered quickly. “Take her!” The other wolves charged. Lyra screamed. Something inside her answered. Her silver mark erupted with light. A wave of energy exploded from her body. The wolves were thrown across the clearing. Trees shook. Leaves spiraled into the air. Then everything went silent. Lyra stared at her hands. “I did that?” The old woman looked at her with wonder. “You have awakened far faster than I expected.” The Shadow Pack leader slowly rose. His expression had changed. He was no longer amused. He was afraid. “This isn’t over,” he growled. Then he shifted into his wolf form. Before disappearing into the forest, he looked back at Lyra. “Every Alpha will come for you now.” The darkness swallowed him. Lyra turned toward the old woman. “Who am I?” The old woman sighed. “You are the last Moon Heir.” Lyra’s heart raced. “And what does that mean?” “It means your rejection was never the end of your story.” The old woman looked toward the distant mountains. “It was the beginning.” Far away, inside the Black Moon Palace, Alpha King Kael suddenly stopped walking. A powerful surge struck his chest. His eyes widened. He knew that feeling. Lyra. His rejected mate was alive. But this time, something else had come through the bond. Power. Ancient and overwhelming. Kael looked toward the northern forest. “What have you awakened?” He didn’t know that someone was watching him from the shadows. And that stranger whispered one sentence: “The heir has awakened.” Then he smiled. “Now the hunt begins.”
