The King’s Regret

508 Words
The stranger’s attack came without warning. Kael moved first. His sword flashed through the air as he stepped between Lyra and the disguised warrior. Steel struck steel, sending sparks across the ancient chamber. “Get Lyra out of here!” Kael ordered. But Lyra didn’t move. Her eyes remained fixed on him. For the first time, she could feel something through the broken bond between them. Fear. Not for himself. For her. Kael pushed the enemy backward, but the warrior moved with unnatural speed. The old woman raised her hand. “That’s no ordinary wolf.” The warrior smiled. “You finally recognize me.” His body shifted, bones cracking as his wolf emerged beneath the silver flames. A black wolf with crimson eyes. The same symbol appeared across its chest that Lyra had seen on the Shadow Pack. “The Shadow Pack,” Kael growled. The wolf lunged. Kael blocked the attack, but the force sent him crashing against the stone wall. “Kael!” Lyra’s voice escaped before she could stop herself. Something inside her answered. The silver mark on her wrist ignited. Power rushed through her body. The wolf suddenly froze. Its crimson eyes widened. “No…” Lyra raised her hand. A wave of silver energy struck the creature and threw it across the chamber. Silence followed. Kael slowly stood. His eyes remained on Lyra. “You did that.” Lyra looked at her own hands. “I didn’t know I could.” The old woman stepped forward. “You are becoming stronger.” Kael approached Lyra carefully. “I came because I couldn’t stop thinking about you.” Lyra’s expression hardened. “You rejected me.” “I know.” “You humiliated me.” “I know.” “And now you suddenly want me back?” Kael lowered his eyes. “I don’t know if I deserve another chance.” For a moment, Lyra said nothing. Then Kael looked at her. “But I know I regret what I did.” The words struck something inside her. Not forgiveness. Not yet. Just a painful reminder of the man she had once trusted. Before she could answer, the silver mark on her wrist suddenly pulsed. Kael grabbed his chest. He felt it too. The bond between them was returning. Stronger. More dangerous. The old woman whispered, “The rejection didn’t destroy the bond.” Lyra stared at Kael. “What does that mean?” The old woman looked between them. “It means the Moon Goddess never accepted his rejection.” Kael’s eyes widened. And Lyra realized something terrifying. She had never truly been free of him. But somewhere beyond the temple, another pair of eyes watched them. Darius stood beneath the trees, listening to every word. A slow smile appeared on his face. “The bond is awakening,” he whispered. “Good.” His eyes turned toward the temple. “Let them find each other.” He turned away. “Because once they do, I can take them both.”
