The voice inside Lyra’s mind disappeared as quickly as it had come.
Do not trust the king.
Lyra stood frozen in the hidden chamber, staring at the silver mark on her wrist.
“Why?” she whispered.
The old woman turned toward her.
“What did she say?”
Lyra hesitated.
“The Moon Goddess warned me not to trust Kael.”
The old woman’s expression changed.
For the first time, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.
“That is not a warning you should ignore.”
Lyra’s stomach tightened.
“But Kael came looking for me.”
“He may have.”
“Then why would the Moon Goddess tell me not to trust him?”
The old woman walked toward the ancient carvings.
“Because the future is not always what it appears to be.”
Before Lyra could ask another question, a loud impact shook the chamber.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The Shadow Pack was trying to break through.
“We don’t have much time,” the old woman said.
She moved toward a stone altar in the center of the room.
“Your power has awakened, but you still don’t understand it.”
Lyra followed.
“What do I need to do?”
“Learn to control it.”
The old woman placed her hand over Lyra’s glowing mark.
“Close your eyes.”
Lyra obeyed.
“Listen to the Moon.”
At first, there was nothing.
Then she heard a heartbeat.
Slow.
Deep.
Ancient.
The sound grew louder.
Suddenly, Lyra found herself standing beneath a silver sky.
A woman appeared before her.
She wore a crown of moonlight.
Lyra immediately knew who she was.
“Moon Goddess?”
The woman smiled.
“You have inherited what others tried to destroy.”
Lyra’s voice trembled.
“Why me?”
“Because you were born to end what should never have existed.”
“What about Kael?”
The goddess became silent.
Then she answered:
“His heart is divided.”
Lyra’s chest tightened.
“Does he love me?”
The goddess did not answer.
Instead, the vision began to fade.
“Your heart will be tested before your power is complete.”
Lyra reached toward her.
“Wait!”
The vision disappeared.
She opened her eyes.
The old woman was staring at her.
“What did you see?”
Lyra shook her head.
“I don’t know what it means.”
Another explosion shook the chamber.
The stone entrance cracked.
They were almost inside.
Then a voice came from beyond the door.
“Lyra!”
Her heart stopped.
Kael.
She could feel him through the broken bond.
He was close.
Very close.
The old woman looked toward the entrance.
“He has arrived.”
Lyra stared at the door.
She didn’t know whether to feel relieved…
or afraid.
The stone entrance finally shattered.
Kael stepped through, sword in hand, surrounded by his warriors.
His eyes immediately found Lyra.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Kael took a slow step toward her.
“I found you.”
Lyra’s silver mark began to glow.
Kael stopped.
His expression changed.
Behind him, one of his warriors suddenly smiled.
A smile that did not belong on the face of a loyal soldier.
The old woman noticed it too.
Her eyes widened.
“Kael…”
The Alpha King turned.
“What?”
The old woman pointed toward his warrior.
“He isn’t one of yours.”
The warrior’s eyes flashed crimson.
And before anyone could react, he attacked.
