The sky on the other side of these immense windows is deciding what it wants to do—the rain finally arrived, but the thunder and lightning left a while ago, likely figuring its job was done here. I will never get over how incredibly beautiful this place is. And tomorrow, before I leave, I’m going down to put my toe in that water, even if it freezes off.
The ballroom door opens and closes behind me, but I’m too enraptured by the view ahead, too warm from the pink drink in my hand to pay much attention.
“Is this seat taken?”

“Mariah said you were still out here sipping some liquid courage.”
“Yeah, she’s cunning. Ordered the cosmo for herself and then forced it into my hands.”
“That little old thing?” Sam smiles and sits. “I believe every word.”
