We take turns going in to see Dad, still asleep, and we take turns retrieving coffee and bottles of sugary fruit drinks for each other and we take turns going to the cafeteria for dinner so that there’s always someone in the CVICU waiting room, just in case. It’s not terrible time spent, to be honest. Gabe and Sam and Lainie joke about old times, and it’s almost like my father’s misbehaving heart might be the salve these two numbskulls needed to end their decade-old blood feud. We laugh until we cry about some of the crazy s**t we did as kids when Dad would be out photographing his creatures and we’d be left to our own devices; we even make fun of some of Dad’s former female conquests and the ridiculous things he’s done for women over the years.
