Chapter 4

971 Words
Aubrey's POV It was his mother, Mrs Rita Archer, and I could see the moment joy and sorrow collided in her expression. Logan instantly stood up, a warm smile breaking through his previously Stoic demeanor as he embraced her. “Mom, I’m here,” he said softly, wrapping her in his arms. But as she held him tightly, her tears continued to flow, unchecked and overwhelming. "Oh, my baby, I can’t stop thinking about your father. ""I’m so scared," she sobbed, her words breaking under the weight of anguish. Logan pulled back slightly to look into her eyes, his hands on her shoulders as he spoke words of comfort. “Mom, it’s going to be okay. I promise we’ll get through this together. Just take a deep breath.” The tenderness of the moment was a fleeting balm amidst the chaos within the hospital. I watched as their connection unfolded; the bond between mother and son was unwavering, even in the face of fear. Just then, a doctor appeared at the entrance to the waiting area, the stark white of his coat a reminder of the grim reality we all faced. Logan stood immediately, his mother still holding onto him as they both turned to hear what news the doctor would bring. My heart raced along with theirs. “Mr Logan, I’m glad you’re here,” the doctor began, his demeanor earnest yet gentle. Your father is stable but still in critical condition. He’s undergoing monitoring and treatment, and I assure you that the staff are doing everything to ensure his recovery." Tension seeped back into the air, but as we prepared to follow the doctor down the corridor toward the patient rooms, Logan’s calm presence anchored me. He gently squeezed his mom’s hand, reassuring her, while her cries continued—an emotional release of pent-up worry diffusing throughout the oppressive atmosphere. With steady resolve, Logan led his mother toward the room, and as we stepped inside, the sights of medical equipment and the beeping monitors created an uneasy reminder of their situation. Mr Hunter, unaware of the surrounding chaos, lay there peacefully, fighting the battle within. Just then, Ethan, Logan’s right-hand man, rushed into the room, a sense of urgency trailing in his wake. He glanced at the somber scene before him, then quickly caught Logan’s eye. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but we have an urgent matter,” he said, his voice lowered to not disturb the frail silence. “Seetah & Co. arrived an hour earlier than expected and is demanding a confidential meeting with you,” Ethan explained, his brow knitted in concern. “They said it’s critical for our partnership.” Logan hesitated, torn between familial duty and professional obligation. But he straightened, looking at his mother with resolute tenderness. “I’ll be right back, Mom. ""I need to handle this.” He gave her a final reassuring squeeze before stepping outside to discuss matters with Ethan. The meeting room felt stark and sterile when they convened, but as Logan faced the owner of Seetah & Co., Mr Bobby Rodriguez, who leaned over the table with an intensity that filled the room, he could feel the weight of the moment. The owner pressed hard on the significance of their alliance, emphasizing how critical their partnership was for not just their company’s future, but for achieving dominance in the tech industry. “Are you prepared to sign off on the terms of the agreement?” he demanded, gauging Logan's reaction. Logan listened, his thoughts racing. After considerable contemplation, a newfound determination lit his gaze. “Yes,” he declared, his blue-green eyes meeting my hazel ones; he assured me,"I'm ready.” And then, in a surprising turn of the moment, he added, “In fact, I’d like to announce my engagement to Miss Aubrey Smith, my trusted secretary. We are committed to building a future together.” The air thickened with astonishment as all eyes turned toward me, a mixture of disbelief and excitement igniting within the confines of the room. My mind couldn't comprehend the actual sentence I had heard from my boss, and my body just had to react most ridiculously. The hiccups I refused to get while my mom breastfed me in my infant years found me at this moment and I couldn't be more embarrassed. Mr. Archer looked at me most irritatingly but quickly averted his gaze to Mr Rodriguez, chuckling. “She’s a very shy and sensitive girl. ""Excuse her manners, please,” he apologized while giving me a warning look to put myself in order. I immediately nodded and covered my mouth with my palm. “We have been together for quite some time now and refused to bring it out in the open just for security reasons. "We agreed to keep our relationship concealed until it was time to let it out,” he explained, while looking deeply at me and smiling. Mr Logan smiles. “God brought you our way to prompt and hasten our decision to make our relationship forever. Thank you, Mr. Rodriguez.” He smiles and pinches my cheek. What's going on?? “My pleasure”, Mr Rodriguez states. “Well, in that case, I think our work here is done. At the appropriate time scheduled for the meeting, we'll finalize the deal and the contract. "Thank you, Mr Archer, pleasure doing business with you.” Mr Rodriguez declared while preparing to take his leave. They both exchange handshakes, and Mr Rodriguez leaves the office, followed by his entourage. The room is left with just us staring intently at each other, analyzing the situation we have both found ourselves in. The journey ahead was unknown, fraught with challenges and emotional ups and downs, but at that moment, an unexpected future began to unfold before us.
