As the helm-holder of Schalke 04 U18, Daniel had lately been ensnared in a tempestuous vortex of tribulations, his brow perpetually furrowed and his countenance a mask of worry. Verily, the U18 squad presently occupied the fourth rung in the 3. Liga standings. However, it behoves us to recollect that, as the veritable wellspring of reserve puissance for the first team, his assemblage of players had, alas, failed to furnish a single fledgling to the senior echelons for two successive seasons. This state of affairs had kindled a conflagration of discontent within the club's precincts, with a multitude of vociferous voices clamoring for Daniel's precipitate dismissal. Such a clamorous outcry had, understandably, perturbed Daniel to no small degree, for notwithstanding his station as a youth team custodian, the pecuniary recompense proffered by Schalke 04 was, in truth, far from trifling. Should he be severed from this institution's embrace, the vista of his future employment prospects would be enshrouded in a nebulous and impenetrable gloom. At this precise moment, his gaze was riveted upon Su Bai, who was gracing the field, his ocular orbs aglow with a febrile excitement. "Jess, by what inscrutable means did this lad elude the discerning gaze of Dortmund? With a single pass of such sublime artistry, there exists no conceivable scenario wherein Dortmund would have countenanced his departure!" Old Jess, with a deliberate and measured motion, swiveled his head to regard the animated and effervescent Daniel. "I am bereft of knowledge in this regard. Perhaps Dortmund is inundated with an overabundance of precocious talents," he responded with a nonchalant shrug of his shoulders. Naturally, Old Jess remained blissfully ignorant of the fact that Su Bai's prior performances at Dortmund had been, to employ a more forceful descriptor, execrably abysmal. It was only of late that his enigmatic system had been activated. Consequently, Dortmund remained oblivious to the lamentable oversight of having neglected a player possessed of such prodigious passing acumen. In the wake of the second goal being deftly netted, the game upon the field entered a temporary lull, a momentary hiatus in the ceaseless ebb and flow of athletic endeavor. Nevertheless, the manner in which the players regarded Su Bai had metamorphosed in a most profound and palpable fashion. From the initial air of derisive scorn, it had transmogrified into one of solemn and respectful regard. In the span of a mere twenty minutes, Su Bai had managed to wrest the approbation and esteem of these Schalke prodigies, a feat no less remarkable for its swift execution. "Su! That was a pass of the most superlative caliber!" Whit Benedict, the Schalke forward who had been the architect of the goal, hastened his pace with alacrity and proffered his hand in a gesture of warm camaraderie and approbation. For a forward, a midfield maestro of Su Bai's ilk was nothing short of a veritable desideratum, a chimera made flesh. Su Bai, with a genial smile adorning his visage, reciprocated the proffered handclasp. "Behold, the boss appears to be in a state of some agitation. I surmise that he is consumed with the desire to enlist you posthaste!" Whit Benedict appended with a surreptitious wink, as if privy to some clandestine knowledge. Not only Whit Benedict, but Ben Cahill, who had coordinated his efforts with Su Bai in a most harmonious and efficacious manner, also made his way towards the object of their newfound admiration. "Su, those two passes of yours were a veritable tour de force, a spectacle to behold and marvel at!" Ben Cahill effused, his words dripping with unreserved praise and admiration. Upon the verdant expanse of the football field, as has been the immutable and time-honored custom, prowess and ability reign supreme, their dominion unchallenged and absolute. Su Bai was acutely cognizant of this ineluctable verity, having long since internalized the harsh realities of the sporting arena. In contradistinction to the benighted neglect he had endured during his sojourn at Dortmund, the players ensconced within the Schalke ranks seemed, by comparison, a veritable haven of amicability and bonhomie. At the very least, he had not detected the faintest scintilla of the haughty arrogance and condescension that had pervaded the Dortmund youth team, a most welcome respite from the prior unpleasantness. "Hi!" "Su!" "Over here!" Old Jess, observing the denouement of the game, promptly and with some urgency called out to Su Bai, his voice carrying across the field with clarity. "Su, observe! I did aver that you should afford Schalke an opportunity. Are you inclined to affix your signature to a contract with Schalke 04?" Old Jess inquired, his visage suffused with a warm and anticipatory smile. Su Bai's heart, upon hearing these words, was suffused with a sense of relief, a balm to his hitherto beleaguered spirit. After all, the task enshrined within the system still loomed large, an ever-present specter, and if he were to depart this land in a state of ignominious defeat, the celestial oracles alone could divine when he might be afforded the opportunity to fulfill it. Schalke 04, at the very least, could lay claim to the mantle of a Bundesliga powerhouse. Although it might pale in comparison to the resplendent might of Borussia Dortmund, it was, nonetheless, within the realm of tolerable acceptability. Old Jess had anticipated that Su Bai would be overcome with a paroxysm of joy at the prospect of signing. Much to his astonishment, however, the lad's countenance remained a study in stoic placidity, an enigma wrapped in a riddle. This was Schalke 04, for heaven's sake! Could it be that he was not in the least bit animated by excitement? Daniel, too, was taken aback by Su Bai's composure, his eyebrows arching in a silent query. He was well aware that, among the teeming multitudes of players of Su Bai's tender age, there was no dearth of talent within this football-obsessed nation. Innumerable individuals were willing to go to extraordinary lengths, to scale hitherto unclimbed heights, in order to secure a coveted place within the hallowed ranks of Schalke 04. "Su, do you have an agent in your employ?" Although somewhat bemused and nonplussed, Daniel was not one to dally or tarry over such minutiae. His sole and overriding objective was to secure Su Bai's signature with all due haste, lest this golden opportunity slip through his fingers like so much sand. Such a promising and nascent talent, were he to exit the precincts of the stadium, would surely become the cynosure of a frenzied and cutthroat bidding war among the other teams, each vying with desperate avidity to claim him as their own. "No, sir!" As a fledgling and untested neophyte in the arcane and complex world of football, it was scarcely conceivable that Su Bai would have enlisted the services of an agent. "Alright, Hank!!! Hank!!!" Daniel called out to his assistant, his voice tinged with a note of urgency and command. A young man, his flaxen hair glinting in the sunlight like strands of spun gold, hastened over in response to the summons, his movements brisk and efficient. "Take him to sign the contract!" "Very good, boss. But which particular type of contract is it that we are to execute?" At this juncture, Daniel found himself ensnared in a quandary, a labyrinthine maze of indecision. True, Su Bai had executed two passes of such surpassing quality that they had left an indelible mark upon the memories of all who had witnessed them. However, in other aspects of the game, his performance had been, regrettably, decidedly lackluster and pedestrian. Signing a formal professional contract, in such circumstances, seemed a rather precipitate and ill-advised course of action. Moreover, he did not possess the requisite authority to affix his signature to such a contract. That august prerogative resided with the club manager, Janis, a figure of no little influence and power within the club's hierarchy. An apprenticeship contract, on the other hand, was well within his purview and jurisdiction. However, if he were to opt for an apprenticeship contract, Su Bai would be rendered vulnerable to the wiles and blandishments of other teams, who would be all too eager to poach him at the slightest provocation. Were that to occur, he would be left with no recourse, no sanctuary to which he could flee. "I'll call Janis," Old Jess interjected with a calm and assured smile, retrieving his mobile phone from his pocket with a practiced motion. His words elicited a palpable and almost audible sigh of relief from Daniel, who was intimately acquainted with the longstanding and symbiotic relationship between Old Jess and Janis. The two had embarked upon their respective careers as scouts in tandem, their footsteps tracing a parallel path through the annals of the footballing world. However, Janis, with his greater adaptability and acumen, had managed to ascend the rungs of the corporate ladder with alacrity, eventually attaining the lofty position of manager. Old Jess, with his characteristic and oftentimes exasperating obstinacy, had remained steadfastly rooted in the role of scout, a position he had occupied for many a year. Granted, his remuneration was substantially higher than that of his peers, a testament to his long and distinguished service. But his position, in the grand scheme of things, remained unchanged, a relic of a bygone era. In short order, Old Jess dialed the number, his fingers moving with practiced ease over the keypad. The call was answered with a promptness that bordered on the uncanny. "Hello? You old codger, what prompts you to grace me with a call? Have you squandered your hard-earned money on those wanton floozies again?" Janis's opening salvo, delivered with a brusque and acerbic tone, left several bystanders somewhat nonplussed and wide-eyed, their mouths agape in silent astonishment. It had not been apparent, beneath his hoary and venerable exterior, that Old Jess harbored such proclivities, such peccadilloes. "Damn it, I've never had a penchant for those women. This is a matter of business, pure and simple. I've brought along a young talent of such rare and prodigious promise that I am consumed with the desire to sign him. Thought I'd give you a heads-up." "Leave the youth team affairs to Daniel. He's in charge of apprenticeship contracts." "I'm standing right beside Daniel. This isn't about an apprenticeship contract. I'm seeking a formal player contract." Old Jess's words clearly took Janis by surprise, his voice betraying a hint of incredulity. In recent years, with the inexorable march of technology and the advent of the internet, the traditional role of the scout had been beset by a litany of challenges, a veritable maelstrom of difficulties. The proliferation of online platforms, with their vast and seemingly infinite repositories of information, had rendered the discovery of hitherto unknown prodigies a task of Herculean proportions, a Sisyphean struggle. Consequently, the era of scouts traversing the far-flung corners of the globe in search of future superstars had long since passed into the annals of history, a relic of a bygone age. Even when a promising talent was unearthed, they would typically make a brief and ephemeral appearance in the youth team before vanishing into the mists of obscurity, their potential unrealized and their dreams unfulfilled. However, a direct request for a formal contract, such as this, was a rare occurrence indeed, a bolt from the blue. This had piqued Janis's interest, his curiosity aroused. "Who is this person that has compelled you to take such unprecedented action?" "Trust me, he's a rare find, a diamond in the rough." Janis chuckled at Old Jess's unwavering certainty, his laughter a warm and mellow sound. Formal player contracts came in a dizzying array of forms, each with its own unique set of terms and conditions, its own pecuniary recompense and benefits. Given Old Jess's obstinate and unyielding nature, Janis elected not to press the matter further, his instincts warning him of the futility of such an endeavor. "Very well. Your judgment has always been sound. Have Daniel bring him over to sign. I'll make the necessary arrangements." Upon hearing Janis's acquiescence, Old Jess's face was wreathed in a broad and triumphant smile, his eyes twinkling with satisfaction. After hanging up the phone, he winked at Su Bai, a gesture of complicity and shared triumph. Daniel, too, heaved a sigh of relief, his shoulders sagging as the tension drained from his body. "Congratulations, young man. You're about to become an integral part of Schalke 04!" Su Bai smiled enigmatically, his lips curving in a Mona Lisa-like smile, and remained silent, his thoughts awhirl with speculation regarding the nature of the reward that awaited him, a tantalizing mystery yet to be unraveled.
