Chapter 2
The night dragged on, the darkness outside Jana's hideout thick like a shroud. She barely slept, her mind replaying the encounter with Kael. What did he want? Was it a trap, or a real lead?
Lena slipped in quietly, a look of concentration on her face. "Hey, we've got something."
Jana sat up, pushing off the thin blanket. "What is it?"
Lena handed her a small data pad. "Our tech people dug up some info on Kael. Kael Vorden. Age 22. No family records. Worked as a tech in the regime's labs till six months ago. Since then, he's been...missing."
Jana's eyes scanned the sparse details. "Missing?"
Lena nodded. "Wanted for questioning by the regime. Guess he went underground."
Jana's gut told her Kael wasn't playing games. "He's resistance. Has to be."
The young rebel from earlier, Jax, peeked in. "Lena, the team's in position around Sector 4 clinic. Waiting on you."
Lena glanced at Jana. "You sure about this?"
Jana nodded, tucking the data pad into her jacket. "I'll go in. Alone."
Lena handed her a tiny comms device. "Keep this on. We'll be listening."
Jana fitted the earpiece, checked her medkit, and slipped out into the grey dawn.
Sector 4 was a maze of crumbling buildings and desperation. The clinic was a dingy door between a food stall and a chop shop. Jana pushed in, senses on high.
The clinic's waiting room was empty. A nurse, eyes sunken, looked up. "Can I...help you?"
Jana smiled tight. "I'm here for Kael."
The nurse's gaze flicked to a back door. "He's waiting."
Jana moved, pushing through the door into a makeshift ward. Kael leaned against a bed, arms crossed. "You came."
Jana stopped a meter away. "What do you want?"
Kael's eyes locked on hers. "I want to make a deal."
Jana raised an eyebrow. "With the resistance?"
Kael nodded. "I know things. About the regime's labs. Experiments. The Chancellor's plans."
Jana's pulse jumped. "What kind of things?"
Kael pushed off the bed. "I worked in those labs. I saw...what they do to people. To make compliance tech. To...other things."
Jana's grip on her bag tightened. The regime's atrocities were whispered about. "Why tell us?"
Kael's jaw clenched. "I want out. I want protection. And I want Elian Vex."
Jana's eyes narrowed. "Elian's leverage. What makes you think we'll trade him?"
Kael's gaze didn't waver. "You want down the regime as much as I do. Elian's the key. I give you proof of what I know...you get me safe passage and Elian."
The earpiece crackled. _Lena's voice._ "Jana, we've got movement outside. Regime patrol incoming."
Jana's head snapped up. "We need out."
Kael grabbed her arm. "Deal?"
Jana hesitated. Could she trust him? But the prospect of taking down the regime... "Deal," she said.
Kael pulled out a small data chip. "Proof. Lab records. Plans. Everything on there."
Jana took the chip, tucking it away. "Let's move."
As they slipped out a back door, the clinic erupted in shouts. The regime had found them.
Kael led her through twisting alleys, dodging patrols. "Safehouse," he rasped, pushing open a door.
Jana followed, breathing hard. Inside, a small, bright room. A girl, maybe ten, looked up from a book. "Dad..."
Kael's expression shifted. Protective. "Mia, go next door."
The girl nodded and slipped out. Jana's gut twisted. Kael had a kid?
Kael turned to her. "Part of why I want out. I need to protect her."
Jana's walls went up. No attachments. Not in this fight.
The comms device beeped. _Lena._ "Jana, we got the data. Regime's all over Sector 4. Where are you?"
Jana's eyes locked on Kael. "Safe. Working on next move."
Kael leaned in. "Tell them. Bring Elian. We'll need extraction."
Jana hesitated. Trust Kael? Maybe. But the data...
She relayed the message. _Lena's voice, tight._ "Extraction plan set. Hold tight."
The room fell silent. Jana's gaze met Kael's. "Now we wait."
Kael nodded, his eyes on the door. Waiting for rescue. Or a trap?
The hours ticked by, tense. Jana's mind raced. What was Kael's angle? But Mia's occasional giggle next door kept her grounded.
Finally, the comms device crackled again. _Lena._ "Extraction team in position. Meet at east vent, old storm drains."
Kael's face set. "Time to move."
Jana nodded, eyeing Mia's door. "You sure she's safe here?"
Kael's jaw clenched. "She's with friends. She'll be okay."
Jana's gut said otherwise, but...
"Let's go," she said.
As they slipped out, Jana knew: this was just the beginning.
The storm drains swallowed them, darkness closing in. Kael led, his steps sure in the black. Jana followed, senses on high, the weight of the data chip in her pocket like a promise.
They moved in silence, the only sound dripping water and distant regime drones.
The tunnel opened into a larger chamber. Jana saw figures – extraction team, with Elian Vex.
But Kael stopped, his voice low. "Wait."
Jana turned. "What?"
Kael's eyes locked on hers. "Tell me, Jana. Can you do what it takes to take down the regime?"
Jana's gut said yes. But...
The chamber erupted in chaos.
