In the Shadow of Betrayal;

Emir said nothing as he was taken to the police headquarters. Resting his head against the car window, he ignored the tense stares of the plainclothes officers sitting across from him, lost in thought. He knew Alara hadn’t betrayed him she was not the kind of person who would. There was no point in resisting for now. But the bitterness inside him was fresh. He knew there were people within the state pulling the strings against his team. Whoever they were, he would make them pay. When they arrived at headquarters, Emir was taken directly to one of the interrogation rooms in the basement. The room was dim, its concrete walls cold. On the table sat nothing but a glass of water and a few blank sheets of paper. His hands were cuffed as he was forced into the chair, but no one had entered yet. He could hear voices murmuring outside the door, though he wasn’t in the mood to care. Leaning his head back, he closed his eyes. This wasn’t a cell, just a temporary holding room. He was waiting patiently for them to show their real intentions. Meanwhile, Alara had already followed the teams to headquarters, but she hadn’t been able to see Emir. As she waited, the door opened, and the one who entered was Chief Nevzat himself. Nevzat dismissed the other officers, closed the door, and turned to Alara. After scrutinizing her with a piercing gaze, he gave a mocking smile and nodded. “Well done, girl,” he said. “You’ve done an excellent job.” Alara’s chest tightened, her stomach twisted into knots. Her eyes darted toward the door behind which Emir was being held. She took a deep breath, forcing her voice to stay steady. “Chief, what’s going on? Why are you holding Emir? You said abduction, but I was there. You know he didn’t force anyone!” Nevzat arched his brows and leaned back in his chair. Calm but firm, he replied, “We know. But no one else does. So we’ll stall as much as possible. If necessary, we’ll find a flaw. If we can’t… we’ll create one.” Alara felt as if she had been punched in the gut. The words echoed in her ears: We’ll create one. What did that mean? To frame an innocent man? To use the power of the state to destroy his life? Bora’s words rushed back to her mind. It had been insiders within the state who leaked the truce to the Wolf Unit. That betrayal had led to a m******e, shattering the Wolf Unit the only force that had once stood against the terror groups and plunging the Middle East into chaos. And now the same state wanted to bring down someone like Emir? Noticing her silence, Nevzat tilted his head slightly. “Alara, you’re like a daughter to us. Don’t get involved. You’ll come to understand one day that pawns like Emir serve a purpose.” But Alara barely heard his words. Her mind was in turmoil. Emir was completely alone now, because of her. She shouldn’t have gotten involved. She hadn’t been able to protect him. And now she was expected to watch his destruction. But she wouldn’t watch. She had to do something. Only one name came to mind. Bora. A Way Out Amid Chaos She called Bora and arranged a meeting without wasting a second. When they met at Alev’s fake office, Alara wasted no time explaining everything. Bora listened carefully, nervously tapping his feet, occasionally glancing at the files scattered on his desk. Finally, he exhaled deeply. “After you called me, I cracked some data.” Alara turned to him eagerly. “And?” Bora narrowed his eyes. “That nonsense about Emir selling weapons to Middle Eastern groups? The truth is, Emir was actually sabotaging the people who were doing it. In the last three years, he’s blown up eighty-six smuggling trucks. Someone inside the state wants him out of the way. Nevzat never found a weakness, but now he has his chance.” Alara shifted restlessly, anger pulsing in her veins. “What can we do, Bora? I can’t just leave him like this! This happened because of me!” Bora leaned closer, locking eyes with her. “Prosecutor… this isn’t what you think. It’s deeper. Tell me are you really in love with this man?” Alara met his gaze for a moment. Then she slowly turned toward the window, silent. That silence was her answer. Hours passed. She didn’t even know where Emir had been taken. And she doubted it was any “safe house.” Who knew what they were doing to him now? She had barely stitched his wound. What state was he in? Alara clenched her jaw. Just then, Bora’s phone rang. She watched him intently as he spoke. When he hung up, his face was grim. “Şirvan is burning everything and fleeing,” he said. “Did you do something to push him to this, Prosecutor?” Alara froze, then her eyes widened. “Damn it! I forgot! I hacked all of Şirvan’s data channels! I’ve got all his coordinates, all his organization’s intel!” Bora punched the air in excitement. “Unbelievable, Prosecutor! You’ve done what the entire police force couldn’t manage in years? Alone?” Alara’s eyes burned with fury. “Now we’ll use this data to get Emir out.” Bora narrowed his eyes, thoughtful. “It’s a huge card to play… but dealing with Nevzat and his men is dangerous.” Alara exhaled slowly. “I don’t trust anyone anymore, Bora. Everyone could be the enemy. But I’m not leaving Emir in that bastard’s hands. This war won’t end here.” Bora smiled faintly. “Then we set the rules.” And so, a new plan to save Emir began. As Alara sat across from Bora, exhaustion weighed on her eyelids. She hadn’t eaten properly in days. Coffee was all that kept her going, lost in the glow of computer screens. But now Bora had a plan. He leaned over the desk, taking a deep breath. “Listen carefully, Prosecutor. Şirvan is on the run because this data could destroy him. But that’s not the real issue. Nevzat and his team are determined to completely ruin Emir. The only charge they’ve got is so-called abduction. But every move Emir made was against the dirty players inside the state.” Alara frowned. “But they can’t hold him forever. At some point, they’ll have to release him, right?” Bora let out a bitter laugh. “If that were the case, we wouldn’t be here. Nevzat won’t release him. If they can’t find a flaw, they’ll fabricate one. And if that doesn’t work… they’ll erase him.” A chill crept through Alara’s heart. “Erase him… what do you mean?” Bora narrowed his eyes. “In a few days, they’ll announce that Emir ‘escaped custody.’ Officially, he’ll be a fugitive. And if they kill him, no one will question it. Everyone will assume he ran and died on his own.” Alara’s breath caught. “We can’t let that happen!” Bora locked eyes with her. “Then we’ll have to move fast.” Days Later – Emir’s “Escape” Their worst fears came true. Breaking news echoed across television screens, shattering Alara’s world. “Former soldier Emir Kara has escaped from police custody. The identities of those who may have aided his escape remain unknown. Authorities warn that Kara is armed and dangerous, urging the public to remain cautious…” Alara clenched her fists, her vision dark with rage. It was a lie. Emir hadn’t escaped. He had been taken. Nevzat and his men had dragged him underground, branding him an outlaw. Now everyone would be hunting him. But Alara knew one thing: if Emir had truly escaped, he would have found a way to reach her. Which meant he was either dead… or truly a prisoner. The next day, Bora made contact. Nevzat and the higher-ups had directed them to Şirvan for the data exchange. A meeting place was set. It was time. At the abandoned industrial warehouse, Bora adjusted the gun at his waist while Alara clutched the drive tightly in her hand. Şirvan’s entire network data channels, escape routes, money laundering schemes was inside it. Bora scanned the area with narrowed eyes. “Remember, Prosecutor, we’re here to get Emir. But we can’t trust anyone. Şirvan’s men could be worse than Nevzat’s.” Alara nodded firmly. “I’ll hand over the data, and we’ll take Emir.” Bora looked like he wanted to say more, but stopped. He saw the determination burning in her eyes. And then… the doors opened. Şirvan’s men entered. A tall man in a black leather jacket stepped forward. “Did you bring the data?” Alara raised the drive. “It’s here.” He nodded, calmly extending his hand. “Good. Hand it over.” Without hesitation, Alara placed the drive in his hand. He passed it to another man behind him, who began checking its contents with a small device. Alara drew a deep breath. “Now bring Emir.” The man nodded, then turned to his men. “Bring him.” Alara’s heart pounded. She hadn’t known what state he was in for days. Now she would finally see him. Finally help him. She turned eagerly And in that instant, a sharp blow struck the back of her neck. Everything went black.
