18 It felt strange to wake up and not have Jake lying there next to me, even though we’d only spent a single night together. I reached out with one hand, feeling the empty space in the bed, reassuring myself that his absence was only temporary. Just a few more days, and he’d be back for good. At least I had his text from the night before, letting me know he’d made it to Flagstaff without incident. There was no reason why he shouldn’t have, of course, but the last few weeks had taught me not to take anything for granted. Arizona was an hour behind Wyoming, and so even though it was almost nine in the morning where I was, I knew there wasn’t much point to checking my phone so early in the day.
